Everyone I know goes to Trudy's for the drinks (the Mexican Martini specifically). The food is fine - some of the dishes are great. You have to remember that it's Tex-Mex, not authentic Mexican (if you have friends that are snobby that way). The South Star location is the one I visit most, and it's very crowded and noisy most evenings. Usually there's a wait for a table. As far as staff goes, I have had some very nice wait staff and I've had some unbelievably rude staff as well. In short, it's not my favorite restaurant by any means, but I have no intentions of not going again. It's a great place for after work or to meet up with friends. I don't see a lot of families there.

Mozart's is definitely the best coffee shop in town if you're just looking at location and size. It's smack on the lake, and there is plenty of room indoors, or on their patio or huge deck. During the summer, the deck is a bit toasty during the day. It's often crowded, which can be a good or bad thing. Their coffee seems good, and their desserts are pretty and downright scrumptious. The crowd that gathers here isn't necessarily very hip, which again, can be good or bad thing. It's the coffee shop I take my mom to when she's in town, if that tells you anything.

This is a very funky (with a sense of humor) yet classy boutique on Thayer Street. I went in because I'm always shopping for jewelry and it seemed unassuming, which is a plus for me. The salesperson working was quite laid back, and since it is a rather tiny shop that's very important. I liked their varied selection of jewelry and kitchsy housewares. I went away with a Providence snowdome because I colllect them, and because it had flamingos in it, which I thought was hilarious.

I stumbled upon Tazza while I was exploring Providence and started to get very hungry. A counter (which they have) is always a welcome find for me when I'm traveling solo, and so I went in. The coffee was great and my grilled sandwich (tomato, mozzerella, basil) was scrumptious. The person waiting on my seemed a little clueless (but she was nice and I think she was brand new). Though I didn't get a chance to go back during the evening, it seems that they have a good lineup and music and other events. I loved the atmosphere. If I lived in Providence, I'm sure I'd hang out there. : )

I was told I needed to visit Haven Brothers Diner while in Providence, but honestly, it slipped my mind until I saw the silver trailer parked downtown the last night I was there. Unfortunately, I wasn't hungry, but after I climbed up the stairs I wanted to order something. I ordered a $5 vanilla milkshake. It was huge and so yummy. I will certainly go back.

I stayed here strictly because of the price ($40 a night through Priceline), so I feel bad complaining, but....I would definitely not pay more for this location. According to Priceline, it is downtown, but it is pretty far from the center of town and separated from the rest of Providence by a highway. There is a shuttle, and the shuttle drivers were very nice, but for this location it would be more convenient to rent a car. I believe they provide a shuttle because they get most of their business from Travelocity and Priceline and people are displeased to find they are actually not downtown. I did figure out how to walk to Wickenden street and it wasn't difficult, but I wouldn't walk in this area alone at night (under the highway).
The hotel has sleep number beds, which suprisingly, I found seriously uncomfortable. My only other complaint is that one night I was there the restaurant and room service closed early with no warning or explanation. Considering the location (there are no restaurants nearby) and the fact that I'm sure business travelers stay here, that shouldn't happen. The rooms were small but clean, and the view from the room (the harbor) was fine. If I had been facing the highway, I'm sure it wouldn't have been.
I won't stay here again, but it should be fine for someone not planning to see the city or who wants to rent a car.

During a recent trip to Providence, I had many chances to use RIPTA and I was very impressed by the coverage. I used the bus after arriving at the airport to get downtown, and found it very easy to find and figure out even with no schedule or planning ahead of time. The next day, while I was downtown, I decided I wanted to go to Newport. I took the number 60 bus, and was really blown away at how pretty the route was. I saw a lighthouse! (excuse my enthusiasm, but I'm from Texas). The ride took about an hour, and I don't think I'd have preferred to drive myself even if I had rented a car. Plus, most routes seem to start early and run late, which is always a plus.

This is great pizza served up in a dark, hip atmosphere. It's like a dirty little pizza joint without the dirt (and serving great gourmet pizza). You can pick from a bunch of toppings or order one of the combos from their menu. They also have beer available by the glass or pitcher. There's a jukebox, which is always good. If the weather permits, there's a little patio out back where you can eat pizza and drink beer all night with your friends.

This is the one of the greatest cafes in San Marcos. I miss the days I used to live within walking distance, but I do stop in when I am driving through San Marcos. The yummy menu is heavily based on the Lord of the Rings series, of which the owners are clearly fans. The inside of the restaurant is very garden like, with a big fat tree in the center of the dining area. Theme aside, their food is just great. It's mainly sandwiches, salads, soup and desserts. My favorite are the egg salad sandwiches served on miniature homemade rolls and the banana pudding. Sigh. Get there if you can. Call about the hours, because they may be a little erratic.

I hope you're not in need of Safeplace services (shelter, counseling), but if you are you should certainly give them a call. Their hotline is open 24 hours a day. I also wanted to mention that this is a great place to donate locally or volunteer your time. As far as domestic violence programs go, this is a very good one and we should be proud to have it in Austin. The shelter itself used to be twice the size it is now, but much of it had to close because of a loss in funding. Please support it.
