For the longest time, I would walk by this shop and salivate over the glasses in the window. This is one place to check if you're looking for unique, rather hip eyeglasses in Austin. Now that I've actually shopped there I can also say the prices are reasonable (for the quality and style they offer). Their staff is absolutely wonderful - they are professional, knowledgable and friendly as well.

Seriously, there should be an Alamo Drafthouse (or something like it) everywhere. A movie theater that serves a full menu of decent, reasonably priced food and alcohol is such a great idea. Personally, I don't see first run movies here that often because their ticket prices are the same as any other move theater (they haven't always been) - and if I'm going to have dinner and a movie I can go to a better restaurant before or after the movie. However, I really do like their special events and midnight movies. Check out their calendar.

I've bought and sold clothes at Buffalo Exchange for several years, and though they do seem to overprice some of their things...I still find some good deals. The good part about Buffalo Exchange for buyers is that they are picky about what they buy (in terms of style, not necessarily quality). It's not a vintage store, though they do carry some vintage. They attempt to carry current styles, so it's a lot easier for me to walk in and find something that I like and that fits than at a thrift or vintage store.

Austin Community College is a great place to take classes for credit if you're already enrolled someplace else and needing to take some extra classes for the summer, of if you're a student that works full time and needs a more flexible schedule than your school provides. I'll also say they offer some good electives if you're just wanting to take some classes because you're interested - their creative writing and photography departments both seem good.

Room Service (which has a new South Lamar location) is a friendly and fun vintage shop carrying a little bit of everything. I have been especially impressed with their selection of furniture - it seems like the prices are much lower than other vintage shops in the area. The owner is definitely a great shopper! The other houseware, clothes, and general knick-knacks are also good.

I don't know about the authenticity of Zen (it's aiming for Japanese), but I do know I like it. The stir-fry bowls they offer are healthy, very satisfying and tasty. Also, I like the fact that they offer brown or white rice with all their dishes. I have had some friends comment that their sushi rolls are bad, but I like their spicy firecracker rolls. I recommend Zen to the hungr, health concious and budget concious.

I have been frequenting Schlotzsky's Deli since junior high when my mom would drag me there for lunch on Saturdays, and it has definitely grown on me. I know it's a chain, but it's a small one and it's Texas based. My favorite sandwich has always been the cheese original, which isn't always on their menu but always available. Also, I am a fan of their BBQ chicken pizza. But you're free to have whatever you'd like : )
I would recommend hitting Schlotzskys during the late afternoon if you're hungry and don't want to deal with a crowd.

It's hard for me to pay full price for books when they are almost always available cheaper on Amazon. But Bookpeople inspires me to pay full price. First of all, the store is super browser friendly, quiet, and has a very helpful and knowledgable staff. The cards and gift section is great. The childrens section is great. The magazines section is the largest I've ever seen and has a better variety than any chain store. If you live in Austin, you should be shopping here.

I tend to go to Kerbey later in the evening, when it's not very crowded and the staff isn't so rushed. Usually, the food is great - I really like the variety the offer and of course the fact that breakfast is alway available. Their seasonal menu is nice and has some original entrees and appetizers. (I had the sweet potato fries the other night - very good). On occasion, especially during busy times, I've run into sketchy service and partially cooked homefries, but most of the time there are no problems. I'll never stop going as long as I live in Austin.

I still prefer Central Market to Whole Foods when it comes to grocery shopping. Their prices are better in general, and the store is large without being overwhelming. The produce selection is great as is the alcohol, seafood, and bulk goods sections. The staff is very knowledgable and pleasant. However, the Cafe is not just not good. The south location is currently being remodeled, but the Lamar location is the cafe I have visited most frequently. Clearly, most of the food is reheated. I have verified this with a former employee. They often run out of food near closing. Also, the food just isn't very good. My former employee friend told me they focus very much on cutting costs and after all, Central Market is really just a dressed up HEB.
