To "Kean Coffee" of course! The new coffee shop from Martin Diedrich (named after his son) brews up a variety of delicious blends and serves delectable pastries made fresh by local bakery Pacific Whey.
Located near Irvine Boulevard, I mistook this for E. 17th St., but this is where the street (E. 17th) name changes to Westcliff, so be aware.
Martin Diedrich is no longer associated with his namesake's chain of coffeehouses, but he truly outdoes himself in this new venture. Extra care is taken with each cup that is served to a customer to insure that it is just right. New creations include the "grasshopper latte": a vanilla latte with mint flavoring. They also offer a Turkish blend among the standard fare of European and drip coffee. The proprietor can often be spotted in the store, mingling with the employees and attending to various needs. A must try for any coffee connoisseur!

My husband and I have the good fortune to be within walking distance of this fabulous new restaurant. We've been to the Beachfire in San Clemente, so we knew what to expect and we were not disappointed! The restaurant has a casual tropical atmosphere, with friendly service and live music (it was a bit loud, but the band they had playing was chock-full of talent. We sat on the patio anyway, so it wasn't a problem). The food is fantastic: I think the Teriyaki Filet Medallions are my absolute favorite. The flavor is robust, the meat is tender...I don't know if it's possible to go wrong with anything on the menu. Be sure and save room for desert when you go--their s'mores are otherworldly!
They are open late for drinks, but the kitchen closes around 10pm. Ample parking is available behind the restaurant. This restaurant is going to catch on quick, so be prepared to wait during peak dining hours. On Sundays a "Plantation Brunch" is available from 10am-3pm. (At the time of this posting this is happening only at the Ladera Ranch location.)
The Beachfire is visible from Crown Valley Parkway, located at the corner of Sienna & Mercantile.

I took my car in today for a tint and received the most friendly service I've had in a long time. So many businesses provide a type of service that is good, but doesn't make you feel like a long-lost family member the minute you walk in the door. Aside from a great personality, Jeff took time to explain everything to me thoroughly, especially with the whole "what is the real story on legal front window tint in California?" debate. Jeff is honest and upfront about his experiences with this, allowing his customers to make informed decisions on their window tinting choices.
They fully guarantee their work for as long as you own the car, and they are open Monday-Saturday. I recommend checking out their website: www.aterrifictint.com (I got a prompt reply from my quote request!) and they also had an internet promotion at the time. My experience couldn't have been better!

...after what seemed like an endless wait, Union Bank of California opened a branch in Ladera Ranch. Robin, the Customer Service Manager, has been with the bank for a long time (I recognize her from the Laguna Niguel office, where I got my first checking account when I was 18). The branch is shiny and new, and the staff is friendly. If you're looking for a convenient bank where you don't get lost in the shuffle as a number, get to know your neighborhood Union Bank.

Every sushi restaurant seems to have its own specialty, and there are so many places in Southern California, that it is great to find a place that stands out. This restaurant is awesome for their fun atmosphere and friendly staff. Their creative sushi rolls are bar none: if you like spicy, i recommend the fire station roll. Their salmon & lemon roll is great, too. Yummy!

Whether you're looking to dine in or simply shop their selection of teas, you've come to the right place. I went there to write and found a peaceful, mid-afternoon repose on a Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed their "Angel's Dream" tea (truly heavenly, as the name implies) and a slice of Lavender Vanilla Ice Cream cake (care of the Baskin Robbins store downstairs). I also left with a tin of tea to enjoy at home. The atmosphere is serene and the staff aims to please.

Well, if you "do" shopping at discount retailers such as TJ Maxx & Ross & Marshall's, then this is nothing new to you. There is a LOT of stuff & high turnover of stock, so be prepared to sift through it patiently to find what you like. If you think you like it, buy it: quantities are limited and you can always return it after the fact (keep all tags, receipts, etc). The downside: I don't always have the patience for shopping like this, and the aisles can seem a bit narrow & difficult to maneuver. The upside: HomeGoods offers a selection of kitchen & bathroom goodies, as well as lamps and sizable furniture items, all in varying styles.

This store has been around for over 15 years and is family owned. Delicious smoothies AND delightful sandwiches to boot! If you don't like health-food, beware--you'll get hooked! Their food is full up flavor and all-natural ingredients (and sprouts! I love sprouts!). It's good for you AND it'll fill you up! It's a great alternative to neighboring fast food located in the same plaza. They also serve as a health food store, with alternative remedies and teas.

The Coach House is borderline "dive bar" thanks to its longevity (read: it's a bit OLD), but fortunately it provides an intimate atmosphere for bands and fans. Over the years, I've seen Aimee Mann, Teitur, Jonatha Brooke...and I nearly saw Neil Finn, but I wasn't quick enough with the tickets. Dinner reservations get you a good seat, but this place is fairly small and therefore few "bad seats". The food is just ok: there isn't a great deal to choose from, and that steak you order medium rare might end up rare or medium well. Again, go to see your favorite musicians in the intimacy of a small venue: this is so rare these days, it truly must be taken advantage of.
