I had my first Ethiopian eating experience here and was very impressed. The atmosphere was great – we sat on low seats around a basket table – the food was delicious and fun to eat. I’ve found it best to go with a few different people. That way everyone can order something different and everyone can share it since your meal doesn’t come with any side items. And remember: they don’t give you forks here; you have to eat with your hands!

Many Saturday mornings I spent here buying more fruits and vegetables than I could reasonably carry home on the T. You just have to watch the quality – sometimes people will try to pass off noticeably old produce as fresh. It’s best to look around before buying as many vendors will have the same items at different prices.

Of all the foods that remind me of Boston, a cannoli from Mike’s has to be the tastiest. Sweetened ricotta cheese nestled inside a pastry shell, dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with powdered sugar…how can you not enjoy it? We used to buy them on warm summer evenings and take them down the street to the park and sit around the fountain and eat them. If you’re not in the area but are craving a cannoli, Mike’s offers them through their web site, although the $45 shipping charge will break the wallet.

Sam’s Club is a fun place to shop, especially if you like big things. Everything here is big – the carts, the merchandise, you name it. If you go at the right time you can find free samples all throughout the store. Be aware that this store likes to hide and if you’re not paying close attention it’s easy to miss the turn. And be sure to have your Sam’s Club card handy when you enter – otherwise they won’t let you in the door.

As with all Kohl’s stores, this location has the hit or miss inventory that I’m used to seeing. This store has the advantage of being in a nice shopping center and is clean and well-organized. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I think this is a fun store just to walk through even if I’m not actively looking for something in particular. Their children’s clothing department seems to be larger than other Kohl’s stores in the area.

Call me crazy, but I like going to Family Dollar. If I’m in the area and have a few minutes and a few bucks to spend, I like to browse the aisles. Although the store isn’t the biggest or nicest, I can usually find something that I need at a fair price. Surprisingly they stock some really cute children’s clothing that holds up pretty well. Family Dollar takes coupons, a nice bonus.

I have recently discovered Ross as a great alternative to large department stores. This store, conveniently located at Brier Creek, has a nice selection of women’s clothing, including petite and maternity sizes, frequently difficult to find in other places. I have found some great bargains here in their children and houseware departments. Even if I don’t find anything to buy, I always enjoy looking here.

As far as stores go, K-Mart is definitely on the bottom tier. This store, in particular, is old, fairly run-down and there always seems to be a line at the check-out. Recently, though, K-Mart has come out with a pretty decent line of children’s clothing that is fairly priced and worth a look for people needing summer play clothes.

Kohl’s is one of my favorite clothing stores, although I must admit it is very hit or miss. Either I find many things I like or I find nothing at all. They have a wide selection of clothes for the entire family and often have very good clearance racks. Once I was able to find about a dozen adorable little girl dresses all for $2-4 each! Kohl’s also has a nice housewares department and the customer service is usually pretty good.
