True story. Once I was on a date and the guy took me somewhere in Harvard Square - out for ice cream maybe? – and we walked around for a while afterwards. As we passed Out of Town News, my date decided he needed a copy of the Wall Street Journal. It seemed an interesting read for him, as he was more of a Sports Illustrated kind of guy, and I made an off-handed comment about it. He told me he needed the WSJ to learn more about making money so he could spend it on girls he took out. We didn’t date long. But Out of Town News did have what he was looking for, as well as plenty for me to read while I waited.

I am an office supply fiend, so I was thrilled to pass by Bob Slate’s one day. I took the time to go in and was so impressed with what I saw. The store was neatly organized and well-stocked, and they had an abundance of everything I could have wanted. In addition to my favorite, hard to find, fine point ink pens, I found more types of stationary than I could use in a lifetime of letter writing. This remains one of my favorite stores to browse when I’m in the area.

One of my most vivid college memories is from a day my friend and I ran all over Cambridge trying to find the elusive Garment District so we could find dresses for an upcoming 70s theme party. It was a cold and rainy day and we got there five minutes before they closed. The sales associate told us that they were not letting anyone in, and that we’d have to come back another day. On the way home I realized I lost one of my favorite mittens on the journey. I went back another day and was met by more polite sales associates and a beautiful 1950s Donna Reed style dress that I almost bought but didn’t because it was priced a little too high.

I have always had luck shopping at TJ Maxx. The store tends to be hit or miss and you usually have to really search for the good deals, but they’re there. I have found great, stylish clothes, fun housewares and even some of my favorite movies on DVD. You never know what you’ll find, but it’s always worth a look.

Filene’s Basement is one of the places everyone should go to once, just to have the experience. Imagine being thrown into a huge pile of clothing and having to swim your way out, preferably without bumping into other people, while finding something to buy. That’s Filene’s Basement. Be sure to have lots of time and patience on your hands because you really have to look carefully to find clothes worth buying. And be sure to wear your nice underwear since the fitting room is just one giant room, not divided into small changing closets like most clothing stores.

Finagle-A-Bagel is a good place to get a good bagel. They have so many choices, both of bagels and toppings, I’ve always been able to find something I wanted. They have this really neat slicing system, complete with a conveyor belt and a spinning blade, which is fun to watch. Watch out with their rosemary olive oil bagels. Every time I order one, I’ve found a stick baked inside.

Before I left Boston, my friend took me to China Pearl for a final round of dim sum. I loved the atmosphere and the food was exquisite. The best part of dim sum is that you can have as much or as little of something as you like and you can see it before you order. What I remember as well as the food was the waitress becoming upset with my friend as she tried to speak Chinese with him. Although he looks Chinese, he doesn’t speak a word and the staff here seemed to think he ought to have known what they were saying! They took one look at me (not Asian) and handed me a fork!

As a poor college student walking around the city, I frequently used to stop outside the window to drool at the delicious chocolates visible inside! Everything you can imagine was dipped in chocolate – milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate. The combinations are endless! I used to think of it was a fantastic treat to go inside and buy one nice piece of chocolate to savor on a nice summer day.
