This place has nice, fresh Thai food and a quiet, (nicely dimmed), upper-east side atmopshere. Go here for a delicate meal that tastes good and costs a bit extra than perhaps you might otherwise be willing to spend. The service is fine and their delivery people are also pretty quick. It's not a special place to come out of your way for, but if you live in the area, it's worth a try once in awhile. Again, I highlight the fresh ingredients.

Everyone knows about Magnolia now (ever since the rap song came out about it!). Still though, it's worth noting that their cupcakes are INCREDIBLE. They're really, really buttery (so watch out if you're watching calories), and they don't last at all if you put them in the fridge (imagine solid crisco), but if you get them freshly baked they melt in your mouth and taste fantastic. The place itself is also a fun experience: lines out the door, and a 'soup nazi' kind of production system (you only get what they've made - no custom orders (as far as I can tell)).. Waiting on line though, isn't a problem. The smell of the place is just delightful :)

You'd think that a place called Milk and Cookies (and that *specializes* in cookies) would actually have cookies that taste good. Unfortunately, I didn't really care for their cookies (or their service for that matter) very much at all. Despite the really cute atmosphere of a Grandmother's kitchen (and the option of ordering a dozen cookies with whatever you want in them (provided you wait 20 min for them to bake)), the person at the register was ridiculously rude (making a face, for example, when I asked for an extra napkin), and their chocolate chip cookies in particular wereterrible! No warm gooey chocolate chips.... just tons of really tiny ones that didn't taste like anything. If you go here, make sure to go for the peanut-butter cookies: these taste the best of anything I tried.

This place is pretty expensive for a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and to tell the truth, I didn't even feel like they were very generous with the peanut butter when I went. If you're really in the mood for this stuff (and you like really gooey sandwiches), make sure to ask them for extra peanut butter on your sandwich...
On the positive side, their peanut butter is really, really good. The dark chocolate and white chocolate peanut butter in particular are my favorites, and for awhile I used to buy this stuff in bulk and eat it by the spoonful (warning: don't do it unless you're prepared to gain a few pounds). Also - if , for some reason you decide to venture in here for something *other* than peanut butter and jelly, I had a pretty good experience with their chicken salad sandwich. Overpriced - but pretty good.

This is a really nice Mexican restaurant in terms of decor (there was some pretty, glowing waterfall near the entrance). I'm not big into Mexican food, but the sangria (spelling?) was good, and I enjoyed whatever shrimp dish I had (though there was a pretty disappointing shrimp to rice ratio). One thing that may have affected my enjoyment of this restaurant was that I was beginning to suffer the effects of a sinus infection when I went: I suffered a huge coughing fit in the middle of dinner, although to this end I know at least that the service is really good & nice: they brough me tea with honey very quickly, and were super-attentive to whatever I needed. A warning: don't go here for the deserts.

This is a great date place!! Fun, lively, young, and cheerful with really great food, I'd highly recommend coming here. I'm not sure if they still have the promotion going, but when I went about 2 months ago, they had a promotion where you paid no more than your age for a full appetizer/main course/desert meal (I guess they were trying to get younger clientelle)! Regardless of price - save up and give it a try (the deserts here are fun)... Also, if you're lucky, you'll end up with great entertainment: the people who sat next to us (and the tables are close to one another, so you get full insight into others' convos), were having some kind of extra-marital affair, and the woman started moaning sexual sounds and talking extremely dirty to the guy taking her out. It was laugh-out-loud hilarious to the point where I had to get up and go to the bathroom to calm myself down. Great fun ;)

I agree with Eric B. that the prices here are generally better than the neighboring Gristede's. Their produce is especially cheaper (I think I found the same head of broccoli for *dollars* less here than in Gristedes's).. and their stuff is also fresher. They have a nice small salad bar (though not particularly fresh), and a good variety of prepared foods near the produce section (e.g., tofu dishes, salmon, chicken, salads, etc). One nice hidden 'lunch' item are their yogurt/fruit/granola cups off to the left hand side of the produce section right when you walk in. Don't miss them! Also note: Their Trident gum (at the register) is the cheapest I've found anywhere in the city. Happy shopping!

Right next to Tasti D-Lite (go afterwards for desert; yay!), this is a great place to come for quasi-fresh 'salad' bar/deli stuff. I say 'quasi' fresh, because these deli places always leave something to be desired in that category (and are always pretty greasy/oily, etc).. This place though has a nice variety and their stuff actually *does* look reasonably fresh compared to other similar locations (e.g., le basket, on broadway). One great item that they have, which others don't, is fresh sushi, with a great sign next to it, saying, 'don't take the fish out of the sushi. We're watching you.' Plus, "Space Market" is a cool name. Go for the NYU student discount. :)

Le Basket is the most wonderful, greasy lunch 'salad' bar ever. Open whenever I've wanted to go, this place has no shame in leaving out food that clearly looks like it was left out all day long.. And they have no shame because the stuff still tastes great: loaded with MSG, sauce, and calories, the 'food' part is just an afterthought. Enjoy a wide variety of mayo-based salad products and crispy chinese chicken, dumplings, etc... The sandwich bar is reputed to be fairly healthy, but I've never tried it. There's a long line at lunch time, but the cashiers are incredible (think Soup Nazi from Seinfeld), so don't worry about a wait. In sum, it's a great local stop, but don't come out of your way to try it.

I love coming to this diner for breakfast/brunch. The portions are just right (not tiny, but not so much that you leave feeling like you gained five pounds), and the variety of stuff on their Western themed menu is incredible. I'm a big fan of the taco salad thing they have there (If I could remember the name of it, I'd let you know), but my boyfriend seems to enjoy all the different Western-type omelettes he's had. The place is decorated in silver, and the service is pretty quick. It's also full/busy most of the time, so you know it's a good place to go. Reasonable prices.
