I went to Italy for a week last year and had pizza nearly every day. This place serves very thin pizza that is very similar to what is found all over Italy. Each person usually orders his own pizza, and you can share with your table mates. Typical toppings here are proscuitto, mushroom, and artichoke. This is the opposite of the thick and gooey Chicago-style pizza.

Furama is a good place for dim sum if you don’t want to head to Chinatown. It is always entertaining to see what food items will arrive in the next cart. Go fairly early (definitely before noon) and bring a large gathering of people for the best selection of Chinese items hearty and sweet. The last time I was here all the cart pushers sported soccer jersey-style tops, so I hope they will keep that cool touch.

This Greek-style diner at Foster and California does not emphasize its Greekness, but those are the dishes that are best here. I ask if they still have any moussaka left, since that sells out fast. The American-style dishes like turkey, burgers, and sandwiches are decent enough. Hilltop is open for breakfast, and they are closed on Mondays.

Hackney’s is a popular place along Printers Row for a beer and a burger. You have to order an onion loaf, which is sort of like a mad scientist version of those fried onions in a canister. Even a small order is a huge hunk of onions. I have had the burgers made from beef, turkey, and buffalo.

If you are lucky you can see the pizza guy do his thing in the front picture window. You can go next door to the liquor store for something to take home besides the pizza.

Arirang Supermarket is a good-sized Korean grocery store near Lawrence and Pulaski. If you like huge jars of kimchee, this is the place for you. I prefer the chicken wings from the little counter in the back corner. They are sometimes spicy and sometimes sweet, so you need a sense of adventure while buying a package.

Order from the cafeteria-like counter and sit either on the main floor or the quieter second floor, where you can also catch up on your daytime television shows.

Maggiano’s is well-known for its mammoth portion sizes, so bring a family or be ready for leftovers. The pasta dishes are served in really large bowls, and my lasagna was a huge rectangle of meat, cheese and sauce. I had no room for dessert, which is a shame. It is part of a chain, but that connection has this placed to the consistently good Corner Bakery.
