Tai Nam is a very busy Asian supermarket in the Argyle Street area. It is an experience to shop here, as they seem to always have some new imported products here. They have vegetables, meats, seafood, frozen and canned goods, huge sacks of rice, and baked goods. The cookie and candy aisles are just wild, giving you the opportunity to try something completely different by American tastes.

There is a small selection of dim sum-style offerings too if you want to stretch your meal a bit. There are a few tables if you want to eat your selections here, and you may be entertained by seeing if the line reaches the door.

I am no expert on Indian cuisine, but I do enjoy the buffet dinner at Standard India Restaurant. You can start with a soup, salad, and breads, or dig right into the appetizer and entree selections. You can survive nicely even if you are a vegetarian. The desserts are usually rice pudding and these delicious doughy balls supposedly filled with cottage cheese.

Sinbad’s is a good place in Lakeview for some Mediterranean food. If you want to try a variety of food, order a mixed grill plate which includes those tasty hunks of kofte meat. The dining area is small and informal, and the food is reasonably priced. The baklava is a cheap and sweet dessert item.

This Ann Sather location is just east of the Belmont “L” station shared by the Red and Brown lines. It is very crowded at weekend brunch times. The cinnamon rolls are famous, and they are sweet but not too sweet. You know this place has Swedish roots because you can get Swedish pancakes with lingonberry sauce for breakfast and Swedish meatballs for dinner. They actually have a parking lot in the back, a big plus in busy Lakeview.

I prefer eating at a table, which lets me appreciate its dishes with ingredients like lamb, chicken, and eggplant.

Now that the Berghoff has moved on to restaurant heaven, Chicago Brauhaus in Lincoln Square is one of the last outposts to have a German meal in the city. The beer and the fun atmosphere caused by live music and beer help to compensate for the somewhat average food served here.
