Las Tablas on Lincoln Avenue serves hearty Colombian dishes. I ordered a combo special with all sorts of items like rib tips, avocado, sweet plantain, rice, beans, and more. Fortunately I am a good finisher, so I was able to eat everything on this staggering plate. The plantain with melted cheese sounds bizarre, but it is a very tasty appetizer.

The Parthenon is one of the legendary Greek restaurants in Greektown. It may be a bit touristy, but order the saganaki and watch the theatrical presentation as the waiter sets it ablaze. A good way to sample different Greek foods is to order the combo, with lamb, moussaka, and pastitcio. The interior has some attractive murals and may get you in the mood for a trip to Greece.

I have many fond childhood memories of the cakes and pastries from Lutz, thanks to the generosity of my parents. In fact, my sweet tooth was shaped due to many birthday cakes ordered from here. The cakes with fruit toppings are great, and so is the apple streudel. I have never had the food here though.

Chicago Joe’s is always flooding my mailbox with colorful promotional deals and coupons. I somehow won a free birthday meal there, so I cashed it in for the chicken vesuvio. It was good but perhaps a bit too garlicky, although that is probably the way it should be. The place has the feel of a casual sports bar. I have not had the Sunday brunch, but it sounds like a good thing to try.

Brisku’s Bistro & Bar is more bar than bistro, but we enjoyed the food here. There is a mix of meat and seafood dishes, with an eastern European touch. My order of lamb shanks was huge but a bit too fatty. I also had some grosh bean soup that was tasty. Don’t forget to order a tall glass of beer here.

Noon O Kabab has become the star child of this area with lots of Middle Eastern joints. The portions of Persian food here are substantial. If you like dill rice, you will be a happy camper as it is served generously with dishes like the tasty grilled lamb kababs. One of my friends was a bit perturbed when he came one time and was almost discouraged from ordering dessert by the server, who perhaps wanted to move him out for the next customer.

I have never bought meat at El Mercado, but it is a neat little store to go into, especially if you are killing time waiting for your table at Tango Sur next door. There are interesting imported goodies like dulce de leche, soft drinks, and candy, mainly from Latin America. You can even buy Argentine music or soccer souvenirs here.

Tango Sur is a popular BYOB Argentine steakhouse on Southport. I ate the bife vesuvio, a rich slab of meat with tasty garnishes. They have a substantial mixed gill combo that is best shared by at least two persons. The waits can be long here, so come early before the very busy waiters become even busier.

Hot Doug’s is the hot place to go for “gourmet” hot dogs, as you can tell by the long lines here. Part of the schtick is that some of the specials are named after celebrities, but it is cool to try pheasant sausage or something equally bizarre like rattlesnake or buffalo on a hot dog bun. Duck fat fries are crispy and are sold only on Fridays and Saturdays.

My friend dragged me to El Milagro, a pleasant cafeteria-style restaurant in Pilsen. The Mexican food is behind the counter, so just ask for what you want or just point to it. I really liked the mole chicken, with a solid brown mole sauce that I eagerly sopped up with freshly made tortillas. The steak tacos come well recommended here.
