The Millennium Knickerbocker is a charming older hotel, though it is overshadowed by the Drake across the street. The rooms are pleasant although a bit on the small side for modern guests. The bathrooms seem especially tight by American standards. Occasionally a piano player does his thing in the main lobby. The staff always does a fantastic job when I attend a business function here

The Homewood Suites can be easily overlooked, but it is a fine all-suites property with a good location in River North. My room consisted of a living area, kitchen with lots of appliances, and a big bedroom. The breakfast buffet was free and very filling, though offering few surprises to the palate. There is an indoor pool in the hotel for guests too.

Millennium Park is the greatest public attraction in Chicago in years, and has spawned a field industry where many businesses around it have added the work “Millennium” to their names. It is free to the public, though its overall costs were the opposite of free. Go enjoy the spitting Crown Fountain, the Frank Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavilion and the crazy-curvy bridge, and stare at the giant “bean” named Cloud Gate.

The Palmer House Hilton possesses one of the loveliest lobbies as far as older Chicago hotels, with beautiful scenes painted on the ceilings as in an Italian villa. After seeing the smallish guest rooms, you may want to drag your bed into the second floor lobby and camp out there. The first floor has an arcade of stores. The famous Trader Vic’s closed recently, though this restaurant is rumored to pop up in a new location soon.

The Sheraton is one of the largest hotels in Chicago, so it could get a bit impersonal if you are staying here. My room faced south so I had a decent view of the Chicago River. I liked the room as it was sufficiently spacious even though it had two double beds in it. The convention and meeting rooms here are rather nice, one of the strengths of this hotel.

The InterContinental is fortunate to be situated at the end of the Magnificent Mile. The building is chock-full of interesting architectural details, so go crazy with your camera inside and outside the hotel. The rooms are nice too, though some people may wonder about the charming but old-fashioned water faucets on the bathroom sinks. The indoor swimming pool and piano bar are excellent amenities in the hotel.

I thoroughly love the overall design of the Sofitel hotel, which is actually a bit west of the famous Water Tower. The building has a funky overall shape, and has really cool interiors without going overboard with any trendy looks. The rooms are quite nice, and the Cafe Des Architectes restaurant serves some much underrated French cuisine.

I thought I was the only person who hated the Webster Place Theaters along the congested Clybourn Corridor, but I guess not. I was astounded when I asked for a ticket for a particular showtime, but was sold a ticket for the next show with no mention that my requested show was sold out. This kind of inexcusable poor service should not be rewarded with return business, and I have not been back to this theater. There are plenty of newer and better theaters around to see a movie.

I like the Corner Bakery chain, even though it is a big chain and not a little bakery. The dessert treats are consistently good and probably fattening too. I came to this location at the same block as the Palmer House, and I enjoyed a delicious chocolate brownie. They are very rich and almost fudge-like with a slight dusting of powdered sugar, so you may want to save some for later.

This busy CVS location is at the corner of Wabash and Monroe in the Loop. In a previous lifetime I believe it was a Crown Books location. The pharmacy on the upper floor is efficient with prescriptions, and you may need some drugs anyway if you are out of shape and walking up the stairs. The photo lab and food items are on the ground floor.
