You have to be able to go during their limited hours and wait for someone to be available, so in that way it is not like a salon. Also, the room is crowded and noisy and very bare-bones, so in that way it is not like a salon. But after you've spent a lot of time and only a little money, you will have gotten the exact services that you can get at a salon, and you will look like you went to a salon. I got a haircut, then had my hair dyed black with bleached-out streaks that were then dyed bright pink. It took about 3 hours but it only cost about $50.

We love going to Rootin' Ridge and watching the toymaker in his workshop. We also love how he leaves us alone to examine--and play with!--the toys, but is always available to answer questions. For such a small store, it's amazing how long you can spend there. They carry their own toys as well as wooden toys from the major companies such as Plan and Melissa & Doug. A refreshing change from the plasticky battery-operated marketing-driven toys that fill other stores.

I have had the most amazing thrift experiences of my life shopping at Savers. It seems that all I have to do is say out loud, "I'm looking for XYZ" and lo and behold, on my next trip to Savers, there it is. In the past year, I have gotten: a whole new wardrobe for under $100, a huge collection of wooden train set stuff for under $10, cute swim suits for every day of the week, and waaaay too many clothes for my kid and practically every other kid I know. With half price on certain color tags Tuesday through Sunday, and then the price goes down to 99 cents on that color tag on Monday. Seriously, some of the stuff is worn out junk but some of it is brand-new brand-name treasure.... and it could be just what you're looking for.

Wow, the fajitas here are so good and the service is so weird! From hosteses who greet every guest with a blank stare to waiters who contradict your drink order, the employees here are sometimes a puzzling lot. Family-run, with a lot of regulars, the place is family-friendly although it is busy and noisy with crowded waiting areas and nowhere for kids to run around. We have started ordering our food to go, which is working great for us... although I do miss the yummy (and strong!) margaritas. Outside of the fajitas, the rest of the menu is fairly typical and unexceptional Tex-Mex.

Not exactly a business, Family Connections is a community support organization that offers a wide variety of programs to help families with children. Parenting classes range from court-mandated training to classes on Playful Parenting, infant brain development, and more. Many of the classes are free and childcare is provided. The library offers toys, books for parents and kids, CDs, and other materials... it's great for trying toys before you buy or that your kids will only use for a short time. The play space is also open for kids to play and parents to hang out, and the Friday morning story times are very popular. An amazing place doing important work!

Austin's own urban organic oasis is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and it is a great place to go buy eggs or veggies or just hang out. Kids love to watch the chickens and explore the lush surroundings, and there is a dirt pit with sand toys so they can dig and play and get covered with dirt.

My daughter started taking lessons at Emler when she was 6 months old, and now --two years later-- her whole playgroup has signed up. Babies and small kids learn to be comfortable in the water in fun parent/baby classes that use songs and games to teach swimming skills. Classes for older kids are small and continue to build on the same elements so the kids feel comfortable. I have been impressed with the teachers, who are genuine and engaging and obviously well-trained. I have also received excellent customer service whenever I have had a question or concern.

I sincerely hope that whoever thought this place up is getting rich. It's the perfect place to escape from the Texas floods or heat and let the kids get their "wompeys" out. During school vacations the crowds can actually be overwhelming, especially for younger children, but the padded environment helps cushion the falls and keep everyone safe. The music is an inspired mix of kids' music and 80s pop, and free coffee for the grownups is a big plus. You have to wonder how clean the place is, and some of the foam blocks in the "volcano" have seen better days. Still, we love it and will keep going back for more.

The Austin Zoo is a nonprofit animal rescue organization, which makes it different from almost every other zoo in the country. The selection and variety of animals is limited, but knowing that the animals are being helped rather than exploited makes up for any lack. The zoo grounds are pleasant and shady, and the zoo is just the right size for young children.

This store has two locations in Austin and both are great. The toys and clothes are generally high quality and in good shape. We have bought special occasion dresses as well as hard-to-find diaper covers, pajamas, and strollers here. A bonus is that you can sell your old maternity clothes or baby items for cash or store credit.
