Shapiro's Furniture Barn has a long history in Newburgh, but newcomers might not know it's here. Stop by! I was there recently looking for a new coffee table. The current proprietor (the son of a couple who formerly ran it; the wife was the first female Newburgh mayor) took the time to show us various catalogs for other items he could order us, other than what is on the showroom floor. You don't get this kind of customer service at the furniture stores on Route 211 in Middletown. Shapiro's is a local business worth supporting -- you get friendly service, competitive prices, and keep your dollars local.

Newburgh Free Library is the main library for Orange County, which is part of the Ramapo-Catskill Library System. Hands down, it has the best selection of books AND of cultural programs. On any given weekend, you can find a concert, art exhibit or other cultural event going on. The excellent staff puts a lot of effort into things such as African American History Month, Women's History Month, an exhibit of artwork by local veterans. The list goes on. This library also has a good selection of new releases. Like all libraries in the RCLS system, if they don't have the book there, they can reserve it for you and it will be there in a matter of days. In an inner city environment, this library is a boon for the kids who are able to come, enjoy the resources (particularly the computers -- they are very popular!), and the respite from the streets.

I had been a member of BJ's warehouse club for some time, but since I am working at a new job, I decided to join Sam's Club, which is about one mile from my new office. The sheer convenience of the location is what made me switch.
I"m glad I did, because I will get more value out of my membership ($40 for a year for husband and I). We use warehouse clubs mainly for food, but the selection of other products at Sam's is excellent. It has a very similar offering compared to BJ"s. The only downside to Sam's (and it may just be this location) is that it does not seem as well staffed (much longer lines to check out) and seems a little more chaotic.
It is well worth the membership price, however, since we like to buy in bulks things such as cereal, chicken and beef, cereal bars and all the other things that are cheaper in bulk.

Rather than going for the Kona coffee at this Starbucks (which just isn't up to par with other Kona blends sold on the islands), we came to the location on Kailua Road for a traditional latte with some of their yummy baked goods. The Starbucks on the Big Island get their pastries from a local bakery, so you don't have the stale taste you find at some locations on the mainland. We stocked up on some baked goods to take on our return flight, since the plane food is less than appetizing. Prices were in line with Starbucks higher-priced tradition, but weren't totally inflated for Hawaii (which pleased us).

Jamba Juice is a healthy juice/smoothie franchise with a location in Kona on Palani Road, right near Wal Mart and Safeway. The store doesn't get too overcrowded and the staff is friendly. They have the standard Jamba Juice lineup, which includes certain nutrition boosts (immunity, energy, etc) and a new lower-calorie line. The prices run around $4 and up for beverages and the staff is very efficient. These are some of the best smoothies in this area, and definitely the biggest variety of fruit mixtures.

When you see a Hawaiian shirt worn in Hawaii, chances are good it was manufactured and sold by Hilo Hattie. A company with many locations across the Hawaiian islands (and a few on the mainland), Hilo Hattie is a store with Hawaiian shirts in many, many different prints, dresses and muumuus for ladies, and other souvenirs. Their prices are on par with other souvenir shops; not cheap, but not as exorbitant as some hotel gift shops. I wouldn't shop here for cheap stuff such as t-shirts or coffee mugs, but if you're in the market for a dress or Hawaiian print shirt, this is the place. We liked the location off Palani Road in Kona.

Souvenirs in Hawaii can be pricey, especially when you need to buy them for a lot of friends and relatives, so we found Kmart in Kailua-Kona (in the mall next to the movie theater off Palani Rd). to be terrific. They had a great selection of magnets, key chains, t-shirts and the all important beer cozies. The prices were lower than the ABC Stores and Hilo Hattie. I was happy to buy magnets for $2 a piece at Kmart (nice magnets, to boot!).

I recently went with friends to check out Sachdabo's, which re-opened after doing some renovations. On Route 9D in Wappingers Falls, the restaurant has an eclectic mix of small plates (tapas) and bigger entrees. We tried a fondue and some small plates that we shared amongst the four of us. The food is creative and well prepared. The restaurant has an extensive wine list that changes regularly. This is a gourmet restaurant in a town where you wouldn't expect to find one. Prices are reasonable for the quality; we spent a good $50 or more on the two of us, but it was well worth it.

There is many a weekend night when I'm feeling like going out, but not to the movies. Bananas Comedy Club on Route 9 (in the Best Western) is the best form of cheap, live entertainment in this area. For $12 a person (occasionally higher if the comedian is really famous), you get about an hour and a half of comedy in a smoke-free environment. The drinks there are very reasonable and there is no drink minimum, unlike other comedy clubs. Bananas gets very busy when they have a well known comic and they'll squish you in the room like sardines, but most nights the setting is quite comfortable.

Osho is a Japanese hibachi restaurant on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, close by to the Poughkeepsie Galleria and other shopping. Their prices aren't cheap, by any means, with a full meal running around $30 a person, but the food you get for your money is high quality, including steak and seafood. The chef cooks at hibachi grills, entertaining you with food tricks as he cooks (and often singing while cooking). I find the atmosphere is not as nice as Gasho in Orange County, but I think Osho's food is better.
