Commerce Bank touts itself as "America's most convenient bank" and I believe it. Open seven days a week, this new bank is making a name for itself all over the Northeast with two services that stand out: being open seven days a week (unheard of for mostbanks!) and offering a machine similar to the Coinstar for free (Coinstar charges a fee). You don't even have to be a member to use the change machine. The tellers are super friendly and even though there is sometimes a line to use the change machine, it is well worth the wait.

Cornwall has many pizza offerings. Leo's is one of the best. The restaurant does a busy sit down service for pizza in the more casual section of the restaurant (you and a guest can get slices and sodas for under $10). Leo's also has a separate dining room for those looking to have a bigger meal in a slightly more formal setting (though keep in mind the staff is still laid back and friendly -- this is no stiff place). Meals are always good here and the owners also do a good catering business. Leo's recently celebrated its 25th anniversary (and recently opened a second location in Newburgh with a third to come in Fishkill) and I can only see business becoming stronger in the future.

The Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville may not be as big as one of its Napa Valley rivals, but it has history on its side. A tour and tasting at Brotherhood costs a mere $5 per person, and includes the chance to explore the cool underground areas of the winery (great on a summer day!) and taste a variety of wines made on site. The winery's store is open year round and offers discounts on purchases of cases of wine. The winery also hosts events on an almost weekly basis: coming up in the near future is the Bounty of the Hudson Food and Wine Festival, July 29 and 30.

The Benmarl Winery in Marlboro is a historic location that deserves a visit. This is a cheap fun afternoon. For $6, you can attend a tasting in the winery's tasting room, and take a souvenir Benmarl glass with you when you leave. Certain discounts are available if you purchase wines on site. Even if you aren't a wine lover, take a tour of the beautiful grounds, which have a terrific view of the Hudson Valley and the Hudson River. Benmarl is a popular picnicking spot and is even available to rent for events such as weddings or corporate parties.

Tamarind Tree is a relatively new addition to the Newburgh restaurant lineup. Serving homemade Puerto Rican cuisine in the new strip mall at Stroock Plaza, this is the type of restaurant where you are rewarded for your wait. Service is slow because of the amount of time it takes to prepare your meal. But the payback is delicious homemade empanadas, fried plantains and other delicacies. I've been to many Mexican restaurants where I have my food five minutes after ordering -- not the case here! The prices are low, so that makes up for the wait. When you have time to sit down and eat, try Tamarind Tree. Word of mouth is making it quite the popular restaurant.

If the loved one in your life is celebrating a special birthday, Party Favors is the place to buy a beautiful birthday cake! The store is well known for its floral-decorated cakes, as well as offering a wide variety of kid-friendly cakes. Not only are the cakes gorgeous, they taste delicious as well. Prices are fair for the Brookline area, in my opinion, especially considering the amount of craftmanship that goes into the cakes! The store also has a wide offering of cookies (yummy!) and party supplies.

I started shopping at Brookline Booksmith while attending college in Boston. I head back there these days when I'm in the Boston area. There is a noticeable difference between the two large chains (you know which two!) and stores such as this one. Independent bookstores are superior, in my opinion. The offerings at Brookline Booksmith reflect the typical shopper there, which I notice tends to be educated and intellectual. The store has a regular schedule of readings, as well, drawing well-known authors. Prices are similar to the big chain stores; book prices don't vary much since they tend to be set by the publisher.

I began eating at Brown Sugar during my college days at BU. This is a place I head for when I come back to Boston. You cannot beat their pad thai, and the fried ice cream for dessert is just decadent. The service is usually very professional, though remember to make a reservation if you are going on a weekend night. Prices are a little on the high side due to the restaurant's popularity.

Wonder Spice Cafe is a treat for me whenever I'm back in the Boston area. I have always been a fan of Brown Sugar Cafe, but I find Wonder Spice to be more authentic in its offerings, plus I enjoy the addition of Cambodian cuisine. Wonder Spice does all the Thai favorites very nicely; you can count on their Pad Thai, their curries, etc., to be delicious. Every time I go there, I try to be adventurous and try some of the lesser known menu items. The prices are not cheap, by any means, but I justify eating here since I'm not in the area as often as I used to be.

I love Bukhara. It is a great addition to the Jamaica Plain restaurant scene (if you want to call it a scene). Their food is on par with the better-known Indian restaurants downtown and in Cambridge, but this strikes me as more of a neighborhood place. Their lunch buffet (I can't remember the current price) is a good value that allows you to try different types of Indian cuisine. At night, the restaurant gets busier, so be prepared.
