I'd driven past the Sears parts store location on Route 52 in Fishkill numerous times before stopping in today. It is a small storefront across from CVS that does repairs on Sears products, sells accessories and refills (such as the wire for your weedwackers, air filters, etc.). This store is a hidden gem that not many know about. They sell reconditioned and returned tools such as snowblowers and lawn mowers here, too. The prices seem cheap to me, with a lawn mower outside priced at only a little over $100. There is a certain risk in buying reconditioned items, but I'd rather buy a reconditioned quality brand name than a cheaply made product.

I've used Sbordone's over the years, as a pianist (not that great a pianist, but I still play!). They have a terrific showroom on upper Broadway in Newburgh with both larger, grand pianos and smaller uprights. They are probably the best known and trusted dealer in this part of the Hudson Valley. Our church just bought a new organ through Sbordone's and was given a very fair price. The owners also maintains a good list of piano teachers and tuners, if you're needing one or the other.

Duke of Windsor is a new dry cleaning business on Route 32 in New Windsor (right near Shop Rite). Their prices seem a little lower than a dry cleaner just across the street. I've dealt with the same woman each time I've been in. She is very friendly and efficient. The only thing they don't seem to offer at Duke of Windsor is same day service, something a procrastinator such as myself really appreciates.

All the discount stores in our area now seem to have garden centers, but I still return to Windsor Farms. This is a local owned business on Route 300/Temple Hill Road in New Windsor, right near the Cantonment. They have a large variety of annuals and perennials, as well as selling high end jungle gyms for kids and sheds for your backyards. I bought a bunch of small houseplants today, six for under $20. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is not as hectic as the bigger stores nearby.

The Madison Avenue clothing boutique, on Main Street in Cornwall, is the venture of local photographer Karen Kaiser Sharp (her photo studio is also located there). The store carries a variety of higher end, high quality clothing for babies, toddlers and small children. This is a great place to shop if you are looking for a gift for a new baby. I just stopped in there for the first time and purchased a gift for a friend's new baby boy. Karen helped me pick out a nice jumper and baseball cap. The prices aren't cheap; these are the kind of clothes a parent will hang on to, though. A lot of the clothes are imported from Europe and show serious quality.

Okay, it is past Mother's Day and it's not super affordable, but brunch at the Plumbush Inn (Cold Spring), the Bird and Bottle Inn (Garrison) or the Hudson House (Cold Spring) are all delicious options. You might also try the Hotel Thayer at West Point. All these places have longstanding brunches with a lot of different options, which pleases even the pickiest of eaters.

We've long been patrons of the Raccoon Saloon, since their hamburgers are well known in the Hudson Valley. The burgers along with the homemade ketchup served at the restaurant, on Route 9W in Marlboro, have often been written up in local newspapers and Hudson Valley Magazine as the region's best. But under new ownership, the restaurant has struggled a bit. The menu is mostly the same, with a few new items introduced, but we didn't get the same feeling the last time we ate there. Something was lacking. But it is worth giving this place another try; we won't cross one of our favorite restaurants off our list before giving the new owners a fair shake.

Cherry Blossom just does not get enough credit for its excellent Japanese food. I can only guess that is because of its location, in a slightly desolate strip mall off Route 52 in Fishkill. Their sushi is the freshest you can get, and they also serve bento boxes at lunch that are as good as any you'll find in Manhattan. Prices are fair; not dirt cheap, but definitely not inflated. Cherry Blossom is popular with local businesspeople, who have recognized its charm as an undiscovered gem.

You know how it seems most diners are set up the same, with similar menus? That's the I-84 Diner for you. Nothing makes it stand out as unique, exactly, but it draws both locals and motorists because of its consistently good food, large variety of menu items, and convenient location. Located at the entrance ramp to I-84 and next to Route 52, this place is busy almost all day. Its popularity isn't unearned, as the cooks always deliver. Prices are in line with other diners, with burgers under $10. You can get a good meal here for 2 for under $30.

If you want to gorge yourself, Cracker Barrel in Fishkill (on Route 9) is the place to do it. Cracker Barrel is the quintessential Southern chain restaurant -- generous portions, no skimping on the fat, with plenty of taste. I've eaten here a few times, and for the price, I"ve left happy. The quality is nothing to write home about, but Cracker Barrel has a solid following on the East Coast for a reason...comfort food. There are no diet items on this menu! An added plus (if you don't mind the calories here) is the good bang you get for your buck.
