Moon River is a tiny boutique in Pearl River offering children and baby clothing. Their offerings are definitely on the upscale side, reaching out to a clientele that has largely gone unserved in the Rockland County area (with shoppers traveling to Westchester or Bergen counties instead).
We were in search of a christening gown the day we shopped there. They have a decent selection of nicer gowns for girls and outfits for boys. The prices are on the higher side for christening outfits, but the selection was much nicer than what we saw in department stores and Babies R Us.
Moon River is worth stopping at if you're in the Pearl River area. If you are a fan of trendy and upscale children's wear, this is the place to go.

I often use the machines at my local drugstores or discount stores that allow me to quickly print photos from my digital camera. I ran into a problem, though, when trying to make prints from a DVD I received from my wedding photographer.
Thanks to Artcraft Camera in the Newburgh Mall, I was finally able to make prints. Beautiful quality prints, to boot. Artcraft has several kiosks that allow you to view and print digital photos -- including a kiosk that processes DVDs (which are now being used to store higher quality digital photos due to their higher memory capacity).
What made me even happier with Artcraft is that the staff members are actually knowledgeable about photography. This often is not the case when I develop photos elsewhere. The store carries a variety of film, digital photo equipment, frames and other items. You may pay a bit more than you would at a discount store, but in return you support a more local business and receive better customer service.

The name "Blue Fountain" doesn't automatically make me think of an Italian restaurant, but venturing inside, I was in a warm restaurant with Tuscan-inspired (with a touch of Pottery Barn) decor.
I was impressed with the food here. The menu is nothing out of the ordinary for Italian restaurants -- your typical calamari, bruschetta, etc. for your appetizers and chicken and seafood dishes for entrees -- but the service is excellent and the quality of the food stands up to other good restaurants in the area.
The only drawback to the Blue Fountain is that it is a little difficult to locate, at first. But once you find this place, you'll likely be back again.

I first discovered Trader Joe's while attending college in Boston. This is a West Coast-based chain that had expanded eastward. Now there are locations in north Jersey (Bergen County) and Westchester County that allow me to indulge my cravings for the easy-to-make frozen dishes and affordable organic products sold here.
Trader Joe's shoppers are very loyal to this brand. Unlike other stores, you can purchase organics and other healthier food items at fair prices -- a big problem at mainstream grocery stores. Flash frozen seafood is a big favorite of mine, since I love to cook seafood but don't have the time to hit Hannaford or Price Chopper for fresh fish every night.
Ask any Trader Joe's shopper and they will likely have one or two favorite products they always buy at this store. I have many!

The Newburgh Mall has never had the same caliber of stores as nearby malls in Poughkeepsiem, Middletown of West Nyack. Most shoppers simply traveled to shop at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor and the Gap (well, Newburgh did used to have a Gap, but not any longer).
The Children's Place is the newest addition to the Newburgh Mall and it is a welcome one. Not quite as big as some of their other locations, this store still has something this area has needed -- higher end children's clothing for special occasions at a reasonable price.
Hopefully, the addition of this store means a higher caliber of store is coming to Newburgh. I just bought adorable overalls and a top for $25 for my nephew, not bad considering that these are clothes that can be handed down to another kid.

When I pop down to Manhattan to see a show, I'm usually crunched for time. Still, we all need to eat, and I'm not always looking to grab a quick slice of pizza or a coffee and dessert at Starbucks!
ESPN Zone exceeded my expectations the last two times I ate there. I was able to get a table quickly, my priority, and my husband was able to scan numerous wide screen plasma televisions to catch more sporting events than even he could have imagined, his priority.
This is a tourist spot, and it comes along with tourist prices, but the prices weren't so bad that I was turned off. That, plus the fact that the food was pretty decent for a restaurant catering to tourists in Times Square, left me happy. I usually become easily disenchanted with this part of Manhattan due to the fact that so many restaurants can pass off sub-par food with high prices to unsuspecting tourists (as evidenced by the presence of both the Olive Garden and Applebee's in that general area...who comes to NYC for chain restaurant food?!?).
This is a chain restaurant like many others, but has a classier atmosphere than your Planet Hollywoods and your Hard Rock Cafes. After having a portobello burger, fries and a glass of Merlot for under $25, I left happy to see my show.

I just happened to be in the neighborhood when I came across Blue Tulip in Bronxville. I'd heard of the store, so I quickly parked. Twenty minutes later, I left with a huge bag full of goodies!
This store offers upscale and trendy stationery, wedding invitations and adorable gift ideas. It's one of those places where you can drop $100 without batting an eyelash. On my visit, I picked up several boxes of unique Christmas cards which later received compliments from those who received them.
You pay the price here for the unique selection, but if you're looking for a gift for a hard-to-impress woman, this is a great place to look. And for cards and other stationery, the creative selection (think on par with Papyrus and Kate's Paperie) can't be beat.

Nordstrom is, hands down, one of the classiest department store you can visit when you're at the mall. The customer service is always top notch, the selection good, and the atmosphere not as frenetic as some other stores.
But my Nordstrom is at least a 45 minute drive from my home, so I have become a frequent customer of their website (and formerly, their catalog, but who needs that when you can go online?). The shipping is fast, the prices are right, and the packaging is excellent. For a few bucks more, they will use their signature gift box, too.
As we speak, I have one holiday gift on its way from Nordstrom. The store doesn't have huge sales or "always low prices" as some stores do, but I prefer the better customer service and high quality of products found here.

I was all geared up to do some Black Friday shopping online. It would allow me to avoid the chaos of the local malls while still taking advantage of some decent sales.
Using mypoints.com, I logged on to KMart's website (I usually visit their store in New Windsor), since the site had some pretty good sales in the flier that came in my newspaper. I promptly found what I was looking for -- the Braun 360 razor, a gift for my husband, at a decent price of around $150 with tax and shipping included.
Several days later I received an e-mail with the title "Order Cancelled." At first I thought there had been a problem with my credit card. Nope. They just, according to the e-mail, ran out of razors. Why, oh why, on Black Friday would you not reflect inventory in your ordering system? This just makes no sense to me whatsoever. Plenty of reputable online retailers use the simple "SOLD OUT" to reflect the lack of availability of an item. Here, I thought this razor would be on my doorstep in a day or two, and I get this e-mail.
Is it the end of the world? No, I can probably order the same item elsewhere. But it certainly does not make me want to do business with KMart again. One would thing, with the healthy formidable competition of Target and Wal Mart, this struggling company would get its act together. Apparently not, though.

The River Grill is one of the Newburgh waterfront restaurants that has been a consistent favorite of mine since this strip of riverfront restaurants first opened several years back. A more classy, grownup feel than some of the other establishments (all excellent in their own right, but more "meet markets"), the River Grill is everything you want in a special occasion restaurant for a birthday or anniversary: you have ambience both inside and on the back porch overlooking the river, you have a high quality of food, and you have like-minded clientele out for a special evening.
On our last visit, I had the filet mignon, while guests had the Southwestern ravioli, and a chicken dish. Each entree ran roughly $25, plus we had a coupon that saved us $25 on our total bill.
Was it worth it? Yes. But honestly, I come here mostly when I have a coupon or gift certificate, because the prices are on the high side. I don't mind paying for high quality, and the service here makes the prices somewhat understandable, but I do wish that dishes were just a few dollars cheaper and I didn't always have to go the coupon route.
But I'll be back, no doubt.
