There's something about the atmosphere of this particular Cosi that makes it so perfect for the Ritz Theater area. The staff is friendly, and the food is what you'd expect from a Cosi, but it just has that broken in feel, and I'm always comfortable there. Sometimes it can get pretty crowded, especially when movies at the Bourse let out, but it's a great spot to meet before a movie or when you're not quite ready to go home after one.

I'm a sucker for a good diner. The food at the Midtown is the best diner food we've found in Center City, but it's your usual diner fare so it's not high class, obviously. In fact, the desserts should probably be avoided unless you're having the jello or the ice cream (their milkshakes are excellent). They make their soup fresh daily, and I've yet to find one that wasn't really good.
But the waitresses--what a great bunch! They see dozens of people every day, but I can go in there, and somehow, they remember me and make me feel welcome. I love the waitresses there because they're friendly, helpful, and they're real. A great place to go alone or with friends any time of day or night.

I was a little put off by Dr. Lang. She has a very distinct idea of how she thinks people should do things (i.e., lose weight), and that's the way things are. She talks and talks about what she thinks, but I never felt like she listened or even cared that I had any thoughts. I only called her office again because I had a serious issue, and I found that the other doctor in her practice, Amy Kurzrok, was amazing and completely the opposite. I don't doubt that Dr. Lang is a good doctor, but she really, really rubbed me the wrong way.
The office staff and nurses/techs are kind of hit or miss too. If you catch them all on good days, they're nice enough, but I hate that they so blatantly ignore me when I've signed in and just want to give them my co-pay (so I sit down, and a minute later, they ask for it).

Mixto is a Latin American fusion type restaurant, where you can find things on the menu from many countries in Central and South America. I know not to expect the spice and zing from this type of cuisine that Americans typically associate with Mexican food, but I really expected more flavor in general (not spice, but flavor in general). Their ropa vieja (slow-cooked beef) is absolutely the exception, and I think it's just divine. It's so rich and smooth in taste and texture that everything else on the plate with it just compete. When I find something this good and this memorable on a menu, I sort of expect that more of their food is going to be so enticing, but I've not found this to be the case. I enjoy their mojitos, and their smoothies, though.
The staff is friendly, but it takes absolutely forever to get waited on and served, and if you want another drink or a refill, good luck. That on top of the price makes Mixto a restaurant that I recommend with some reservations.

If you loved homemade baked goods but don't have the time or inclination or skill to do it yourself, or if you want to visit Amish Country and can't make the trip, stop by Beiler's Bakery. My only complaint is that they're only at Reading Terminal Market from Wednesday to Saturday, but that's because I love their stuff so much.
I'd never had a whoopie pie before going to Beiler's, and I can't say that I need to go anywhere else for one because this is one of those desserts that just hits the nail on the head for me. Everything they sell from the pies to their breads (to their whoopies) reminds me of food the way it used to be. When you could buy things and eat them and not have to wonder what was in it or who made it or where it came from. It's food that won't be kind to your waistline, but I'm glad there's a bakery in Philly that remains unpretensious and deliciously calorie-rich for when I want to remember my childhood.

I'm not much of a pretzel fan, but this place has gotten me to buy one of theirs more than once. You can watch the people roll them out by hand and prepare them for baking, and when they're out of the over, you can watch the rest of the process. In a city notorious for soft pretzels (those sad little logs of dough that I just don't understand...), this place has my business.
But if you can only buy one thing when you stop here, get their ice cream. Ignore the salty, buttery, fresh-baked goodness of the pretzels, and give in to your inner ice cream fiend because this stuff is really worth it. I don't know if it's homemade like Bassetts down the aisle, but wow, I'd go to Fishers over Bassetts any time. All of the flavors are absolutely delicious, and they don't skimp on the ingredients in the ice cream either--you get lots of cookies or fudge swirls or whatever--and it's all soooooo creamy and divine. Skip the Ben & Jerry's and take home a pint of their butter brickle or their oreo cookie or whatever other flavor strikes your fancy. You will absolutely not regret it.

I get almost all of my produce from Iovine Brothers, and their selection is what always draws me back. On Saturdays, the place is absolutely ghastly crowded--you can hardly move two feet sometimes--but if you get there in the early afternoon, the quality of the stuff is higher, I've found, because the turnover is higher then so everything is fresher. If you get there on a Monday afternoon, things are a little bit bleaker because there's not as much traffic, but I can't say that I've ever left disappointed.
You'll find all of your staples (oranges, bananas, apples, potatoes, onions, lettuce, carrots, mushrooms, etc), but they also have an ever-changing selection of more exotic fruits and veg and mushrooms. They have some organic stock, and they also carry nuts and dried fruit.
They've changed the place around a bit, so the aisles are wider and more accomodating, and the whole place feels a little less confined.
If you're looking for produce at amazing prices, this is the place to go (seriously--I get so, so much food for so little money, and I'm almost never disappointed with what I've bought).

I say that Nanee's Kitchen is surprisingly good not because it looks like it won't be, but because I would never have expected to find my favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant in the Reading Terminal Market. Regardless, if you eat here, you'll go home with a fully, happy tummy.
The prices are very good, and the staff is friendly. But most of all, I love their food. I think they have the best chana masala in Center City. I hate spinach, but they way they do their saag makes me actually *enjoy* the stuff. Like all pre-made foods, I recommend getting their earlier rather than later as things get a little less tasty closer to the end of the day.

The selection of gelatos and sorbets varies from day to day with a few exceptions--they always have a handful of regular flavors that you can find any day you go there. They make an attempt to use locally grown fruits when they're available, and their offerings change with the seasons to keep everything as fresh and yummy as possible.
I know they offer some beverages and some non-gelato food items, but honestly, I'm never paid enough attention to even know what it is.
The staff is friendly, and they'll let you try any flavor at all. Keep in mind though, that the prices are a liiiiitle bit on the high side and that they only accept cash, so it's more of an occasional, amazing treat.

The Kennedy Food Garden is probably the best small grocery store I've found in Center City, and I'm sad that we don't live near it anymore. They have a really wide selection of your non-perishables (crackers, cookies, pasta, cereal, canned goods, jams, etc) and kosher food, a great selection of dairy and bread (fresh made and pre-sliced packaged), but best of all, their produce is always, ALWAYS fresh. I've never seen a place this size that has fresh, varied produce before. Their deli is top notch, and I think the prices are reasonable for a local grocer.
If you live nearby, this place will probably have what you need and save you the trip to a bigger store when you're in a rush.
