If you’re going to Walla Walla I feel compelled to recommend that you stop at the Whitman Mission…its chalk full of history! Highlights include commemorating Narcissa Whitman (coolest name ever) for being one of the first two white women to traverse the country, and the missionary confrontation with both measles AND murder.
As intense and intriguing as those facts are, the site is even cooler for its constant reminders of one of the pioneers of educational PC software – ‘The Oregon Trail’. Find a field and hunt for some buffalo (be weary of how much you can carry back), ford a river, get dysentery…it all seems in the realm of possibility.
Unfortunately that’s about all I remember from my elementary school trips. That, and somewhere in Walla Walla (I think maybe Wallula?) there’s a pulp factory that smells so horrific and strong it will burn your nose hairs off and probably make you rethink your life philosophy.
You can read more about the mission here:

Oh man. Talk about a sandwich. I don’t even care that it comes with mayonnaise and jalapeños, which I generally avoid. I don’t even think I would care if it came slathered in sauerkraut, salmonella and self-hate. The pork is THAT good. Throw in toasty baguette-ish bread and a side of buttery corn on the cob and you’ve got a Cuban sandwich for the ages. Or at least for a really satisfying lunch.
Generally pretty crowded and there’s limited in house seating, so be prepared to order to go. Walk down to the cut. Eat in your car. Do whatever you have to do.

I know. Seattle has 3 friendly neighborhood coffee shops per square foot. But this might be one of my faves. Their staff is uber friendly in a non invasive way, but more importantly the coffee is delicious. This location is at the heart of Lower Queen Anne so the crowd is eclectic. Prices are average, wifi is free, but again...their coffee tastes really, really good.
I think I'm going to go get one more latte, let my enthusiasm go completely overboard, and call it a day.

The Brooklyn Grinder makes a mean sandwich. Mean in the sense of being both tasty and a tiny bit aggressive. I am unable to order anything besides the turkey, bacon and swiss melt. The way this delicious thing is toasted creates an assertively hard core toasted sandwich that tears up the roof of my mouth… the 'good pain' kind of way. Mmm…pain.
This lovely sandwich shop moved to The Ave about a year ago (yet remains the ‘Brooklyn’ grinder) and is usually just the right amount of crowded; easy enough to get a sandwich at peak hours but not so empty that you’re uncomfortable. The staff is super nice and always double checks before you leave to assure you had a good meal…which so far, has always been the case. Traditional sandwich side options include potato or pasta salad (yum!), or chips.
Deliciousness plus a small but convenient parking lot makes it entirely worth a trip to the university district for sandwich satiation.

Antique liquidators is an enormous antique store in south lake union run by delightful owners & staff.
Rightfully the recipient of great word of mouth, this place seems like an oasis for antiquers with a huge selection of all things old and amazing. The majority of their products are really high quality - no "dirty beanie babies" here. I can't imagine you could get through this place in a hurry...lots to see and subsequently buy.

I’m totally obsessed with RadioShack for absolutely no reason and this location on The Ave is no exception. The chain had horrible commercials with Teri Hatcher & Howie Long…and even worse, somehow managed to make Ving Rhames look completely uncool. Not to mention after every purchase they ask you for your zip code. I’ve got the customer / merchant relationship down to a science – throwing me off like that makes me verbally and mentally stumble as if they had asked me kill their Grandma. Then I can’t remember my zip code because I’m frazzled, and end up blurting out something like '98bannanaWhat?1apartment3$What?". It’s humbling.
Nevertheless! There’s something about the idea of RadioShack that is the complete epitome of gadgets, electronics, robotics, and all that is good and industrious about the future. The whole ordeal is very ‘Short Circuit’ and ‘The Explorers’. Whenever I walk within five feet it’s like it’s acceptable to just yell out ‘CYBORG’ or ‘JIGGAWATT’!
I rarely ever need anything from RadioShack and when I do it’s only because my dad tells me I do. But it’s still fun to walk in and pretend I have a half built space cruiser in my garage that just needs a little more juice. I doubt the guy believes me when I can’t even remember my zip code, but what else do I need all the extension cords, amplifiers and converters for?

It's taken months where I got to a place in my life, emotionally, that I can even speak about Ruby's Diner. Located in Redmond town center, I’ve had a few memorable experiences here when my suburban-centric parents were in town. Said experiences left me physically unwell and somewhat psychologically wounded.
All of this is directly associated with one dish; the cinnamon roll French toast. The picture found on the menu makes it completely and absolutely impossible to order ANYTHING else…no matter how hard you try or how many times you’ve ‘learned your lesson’. The food itself is pretty delicious. I mean…it’s a form of cinnamon rolls. But with syrup. The synthetic yet positive feel of both the interior and the service does a good job of masking the impending disaster. As you probably guessed, the inability to not eat the entire plate of three huge rolls is on par with the ordering dilemma but with disheartening digestive consequences. I’ve literally ruined entire days.
This Rudy’s has delightful service, clean booths and efficient turnaround. Unfortunately, my visits have ceased due to being convinced Rudy’s has a personal vendetta against me. And my stomach. Enter with caution.

Andy's Diner. Wow.
This place has so much character it came very close to blindsiding me or causing an aneurism...it may have done both.
The restaurant is made up of multiple old train cars fused together to create seemless interiors of booths, with a few separate one off rooms and a shadowy bar in the back. The home made sign upon walking in states 'Everyone is special at Andy's Diner' and something about the physical building, lighting and overall ambiance assured me it was true. The service was friendly and sociable; constantly playing with the train horn and offering to show us around. My turkey, bacon & swiss wasn't particularly life changing but was pretty tasty. Regular prices - it looks like the breakfast menu was pretty cheap.
Super great place for families or people who steadfastly act like they're 8.
UPDATE: This restaurant is not open on Sundays. Don't go on Sundays. One more time for good measure. Don't drive to the middle of industrial Seattle on a Sunday morning when you're really hungry. No good will come of it.

My first instinct for bar & restaurant recommendations (or really...for anything) always seem to be for places either not mentioned by anyone else, or not even listed. But Jabu's Pub is pretty sweet...for serious!
Found on Roy St. on the skirts of central LQA (Lower Queen Anne), Jabu's is a home retrofitted into a business which provides character if nothing else. There are two main rooms, each with their own bar & seating. The back room is host to TVs, pool tables and the like, with an enchanting outdoor patio to connect the two.
The staff is almost always charismatically snarky. No quicker way to feel at home than cheeky, fun service! Their bar menu is thought provoking, with some items not so secretly aligned to microwavable goods available at Costco (IE Hot Pockets). Decent to standard prices and manageable crowd make it a rock-solid choice.

Listening to FM Radio in your car is SO February 2006. It's April and now that I have a CD player I'm totally over it.
I wasn't always so lucky as to have a midsized, adult oriented car. As a previous owner of a full sized, elderly oriented vehicle I have plenty of experience with what the Seattle Radio world has to offer. When all is said and done, I whole heartedly insist that KJR (95.7) is your best bet. While KEXP is sooo cool to like (and genuinely pretty good) sometimes you want to - nay need to - sing. Warm 106.9 almost promises to play Phil Collins at least once an hour and 93.3 makes me feel at home in the ghet-to, but KJR just plays really, really good songs.
Case and point, I just visited their website and some of the last ten songs they played included: Heart, Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel, Genesis (Take that 106.9! I don't need you!), John Mellencamp, Van Halen, and Hall & Oates. I mean...really.
