Culver's has this weird thing where the food is more expensive than other hamburger joints, the setup in the restaurant is inconvenient, and the fries are not that great. But I keep going back. Why? The hamburger buns are really good, like the best buns I've ever had on a hamburger. I also like the custard and the Culver's root beer. The menu is pretty hard for me to read sometimes, and they never give me a chance to read it. But those buns...

There are a couple different places to get frozen custard in Austin, but I prefer Sandy's Barton Springs and South First. They serve both vanilla and chocolate custard, and I think you can get a dipped cone as well. The custard is creamy, and they give you a lot. They also serve pretty good burgers, too. Great place to stop for a treat if you're out and about on the weekend. They have a drive through.

Barnes and Noble? Borders? Blah! If you live in Austin, it is your patriotic duty to patronize Book People, Austin's Heart of Books. They have a well trained and knowledgeable staff, a great selection of books (and magazines, my favorite), and a gigantic children's section that includes more than corporate-licensed character crap-stories. They're also a good source for gifts: notebooks, incense, religious icons, some toys, games and kitch. Go buy a book!

Satay Serves up a pretty authentic Thai menu with the heat a bit toned down. Lunch specials are reasonably priced. They have an outdoor patio, but I don't think they will serve you if you sit there. I always go for the Pad Thai. They do a pretty good version of this dish. Their curries seem to lack in terms of quantity.

Hyde Park Grill has these great french fries and a special sauce for dipping that is very addictive. You can get good sandwiches and basic American fare for lunch or dinner. The place is often packed on weekend nights due to the proximity to campus. Wait staff is generally good, but I've had some stinkers.

Triumph Cafe is both a Vietnamese restaurant and a coffee place with fresh pastries. The serve noodle bowls, noodle soup, and fried rice. But my favorite are the stir fried "Chinese" style dishes, which come with a hearty serving and delicious sauces. They have a great patio with a pond and fountain that backs onto a wooded lot. They also have Wifi, but not a lot of places to plug in or comfortably work.

La Salsa offers quickly prepared, but not quite fast food Mexican food, but unlike Taco Bell or Taco Cabana, the style is not Tex Mex. Instead you can get things like fish, shrimp or pork tacos. They have a fresh salsa bar that beats Taco Cabana's. I particularly like their avocado salsa, which they have all the time. It's like getting free guacamole with every meal.

The brunch buffet at Trudy's Northstar is not available at all the Trudy's locations, maybe only at this one. They always have three or four egg dishes, quiche, sausage, chilaquiles, fruit, yogurt, biscuits, gravy PLUS bacon, waffles, pancakes and omelettes to order. Bang! The service is generally good, and, at least early on Saturdays, it never too crowded.

Ruby's stands out from the rest of the local BBQ purveyors by using B3R hormone free beef for its brisket. However, I go there for the Chopped Beef Sandwich, which also includes sausage leftovers (I think). The meat is so juicy, it melts in your mouth. They have some great sides, too. Try the greens (spicy) and the creamy cole slaw (with poppy seeds).
