CEASE is not only a crisis line, but also a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. It's completely confidential and great care is taken to keep the shelter's exact location secret. It serves Hamblen and surrounding counties. All services are free. If you wish to volunteer for the crisis line, training is held several times a year. Sometimes, the group sponsors self-defense training. The Crisis line is a good place to call even if you're too scared to leave your spouse. The counselor will talk to you about your options and at least you'll know what help is available. The counselors are also very supportive and will always just listen. (Children are welcome at the shelter, too.)

Good Times Party Supplies recently opened in the T.J. Maxx Shopping Center on Morris Blvd. I was there during opening week and was very impressed with both prices and assortment. This was near Halloween, and they had lots of neat stuff. The balloon assortment was great and the gift bags and wrapping paper selection was also huge. You can also get a lot of neat stuff for kids' birthday parties tied to a theme (Barbie Dora, Pirates, etc.). Plates, napkins, favors and everything, so you can stock your party with one stop.

Fuji Sushi has been open for a couple of months, so it looks like it's going to make it. (Restaurants around here come and go quickly in case you haven't noticed.) I've heard mixed reviews about this place and I was nervous about trying it. I've tried it three times, found the food to be delicious and the service to be excellent.
The restaurant does not offer a separate lunch menu, but there are several items that would compete with lunch prices at other restaurants. Vegetable Tempura for example is only $5.95 and the shrimp fried rice is $6.25. You can also choose several sushi dishes, some filling appetizers and soups and salads for under $6.00. The first time I went I had California Rolls and they were delicious. No the crab meat or the avocado. I've had the Shrimp Tempura Roll and it's delicious. The Hibachi chicken is good. It's all white meat. If you're wanting take-out, you'll find the service to be very quick. All the dishes can be prepared without MSG. My husband has asked some special requests for sushi and the waitress has never hesitated to pass it along. He's always gotten it made just the way he wants it. This restaurant doesn't offer the full table shows that are associated with Japanese restaurant. It does offer a great location and great atmosphere.
The major complaints I've heard involve some of the soups. Apparantly, some vegetables and breaded and fried like tempura and then put in soup. Doesn't sound too tasty. I stay away from it, but I have orderd five or six items on their menu and have been very pleased.
The restaurant is on West Morris Boulevard, just a few blocks east of the Morris Blvd/AJ highway. Even though there's not red light, it's easy to get in and out even in rush hour. There's also plenty of parking. The restaurant does not deliver. It is not open for lunch on Saturday and Sunday. During the week, it closes at 2:30 for lunch and reopens serving supper at 4:30 p.m. This is a very good addition to Morristown's restaurant listings!

When compared to Manley or Alpha, Union Heights does look a bit worn. It's probably one of the oldest schools in Hamblen County. On the inside, though, it's completely different. The building is bright, with lots of light and lots of color. The teachers here are excellent. They get to know your children and not only teach them, but challenge them to learn and to dream. The school has a few PTA events, which offer just enough time for parents to meet each other and create more of a sense of community. The playground equipment is also great. You can drive by in the afternoon and see all the kids out enjoying it. The school also has a very organized method of dropping off and picking up children, making sure the youngsters are never left unattended and never get into an unknown car. The rules are reasonable. The principle offers both the understanding and the discipline needed to run a successful school. The school also offers lots of activities. There are plenty of sports including basketball and cheerleading. There are just as many activities to exercise the brain. The school always fields a great scholar bowl team, has a Beta club and holds a lot of poster or essay contests.

This Japanese restaurant is take-out only. It does deliver to area offices, which makes it convenient. I first tried it while working at a client's near Cedar Bluff. It's delicious. The quality of the food and sauces is very close to Kan-Pai. If you like Japanese for the taste of the food and not just the show at the table, you'll like the Hibachi Grill. And it's very reasonably priced. Entrรฉes are about $7, much less than the $18 you'll find at sit-down restaurants in town. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Ross's Dress for Less in Morristown is one of the newer stores and it is considerably smaller than the store in Turkey Creek in Knoxville, but it's still worth visiting every week. It's much more organized than its competitor, T.J. Maxx, and new stuff is always coming in. You can find Liz Claiborne knits for as low as $9.99 and Jones New York lined slacks for $19.99. The misses and junior departments are huge. The handback selection is pretty large, too, and the prices are very reasonable. The men's department is also large. The plus size isn't as big, but it's still larger than the plus department of any other store in town. The housewares department is also large and offers deals in linens and cookware. You can also find gift items and note cards. I bought a leather journal there last week for just $4. Ross's also has a liberal return policy. Leave the tags on, keep the receipts and you can get cash back for 30 days. Not bad. My only complaint is that usually one or two cashiers are on duty, so if you don't time it right, you can end up waiting in line for a while.

This is a unique furniture store in that it offers a showroom of new, quality furniture and a warehouse of furniture with slight imperfections and used furniture. Going to the latter, you can get bedroom suits for under $100. A friend just got a nice leather recliner for $40. It is slightly worn, but it's very comfortable. The person who bought it his trying to furnish his first apartment and he found his money could go very far there. I think the prices are even lower than yard sales. You might be able to "bargain" and get the price to go a little lower, but we didn't have any luck with this. The new furniture is beautiful. The store offers a lot of variety and the bedroom suits I looked at were solid wood. The inventory changes every couple of weeks. It's definitely worth the drive from Morristown or Newport!

Holston Electric is an odd business to review. It's not like you can choose from several electric carriers. For people living in this district, it's either Holston or Natural Gas for heat. We chose Holston and I'm very glad. Some electric co-ops in the state have a bad rap for long outages. We've used Holston Electric for several years and I have had very few outages. The longest lasted 30 minutes. Plus, the customer service is excellent. The deposit is very reasonable and it only takes one or two days to get service hooked up to a new home. Getting an account changed is very easy and can usually be done the same day if all the paperwork is completed. If you live on the east end of the district, it's easier to mail your payment than to drive out to the office.

I always thought Comfort Inn was one of the cheaper, maybe-not-so-nice chains. The Comfort Inn Apple Valley completely changed my mind. I recommend it to anyone visiting the Smokies. As a matter of fact, it's the only motel/hotel I send my friends to when they visit the Smokies. The staff is great. If you need extra towels, you'll get extra towels, not just a few hand towels. And you'll find plenty in your room. The inn has both indoor and outdoor pools. That's nice even in the summer. I found a crowd at the outdoor pool, but my husband and I had the indoor pool to ourselves. There's a jacuzzi in the same room. We usually try to get one of the first floor rooms with an in-room jacuzzi. Off season, you can get it for about $110. During the fall, it's probably more like $135. It's worth it. The room is really a suite with a sitting area. The jacuzzi is huge and there's a gas fireplace. I've always found everything to be clean. It is located on the edge of Pigeon Forge, which makes it easy to get to some places. It can be a long time if you're going to the mountains in the evening, as traffic can be barely moving on the major highway during the busy weeks. Pack a picnic and leave before noon. You'll be fine. It's easy to get to four or five restaurants and it's right across the street from Tanger Five Oaks Outlet, probably the most popular outlet mall in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge area.

The Walters State Great Smoky Mountains Expo Center has lots of activities in the fall, but its horse shows are tops! The center is much different than most horse arenas. It's climate controlled, it's very clean and there's plenty of room. It is an arena and with the lay-out, every seat in the house is good. I think for many of their shows, organizations simply rent the facility. Regardless, admission prices are always reasonable (sometimes as cheap as $3 or $5) and the prices to show are usually competitive. Many of the shows here offer generous rewards. You can check the calendar at Walters State's Web site, www.ws.edu. Click on Business and Community and then on the link for the Expo Center. You'll see the link for calendar of events. I think charity horse shows are scheduled every weekend in October. There's a few horse shows in November, but the national BMX races is always held over Thanksgiving weekend. It's great as a spectator and it's held inside the arena. Concessions are sold at most events. You don't usually have to worry about getting a ticket, but if you're traveling a good distance you might want to call ahead. You'll definitely want to call ahead if you're staying overnight - not just for tickets but also for lodging as near-by hotels are somewhat limited and book up quickly.
