Since the baby came along, our grocery bill has gone up quite a bit. One place where I know our dollar goes far is Trader Joe's. Not only do they have a very good selection of healthy and reasonably priced foods, but even their frozen food section is a great place to stock up on a week's worth of meals without breaking the bank or eating junky fast food. Items I recommend: Naan, Garlic Naan, Gnocci, Bulgogi (not frozen, in the meat section), and any of their quiches.

This bed & breakfast in Rancho Cucamonga (did I spell that correctly?) is a great place for a wedding. We went to a small (90ish guests) classy wedding there recently, and were blown away at how comfortable everyone was out in the garden dancing and eating and relaxing. The staff was very courteous and everything seemed to go off without a hitch.

This is a great place to take your dog and go for a walk. On a clear day, the view from the top is spectacular. If you have out-of-towners staying with you, be sure to bring them here (if they're up for the hike). Also a great place to take those touristy pictures that they want to bring home and show off.

If you need a gift for a kid's birthday or a new baby - go here! Much better and more cool stuff than what you'd find at a toy store. Some of the rare books and prints are on the expensive side, but they've also got a good variety of stuff at a decent price for a kid of any age. They also have events almost every weekend for the kids, including book readings and musical acts.

Contrary to popular belief, this museum isn't about dinosaurs; it's about animals in the Pleistocene Era (much later). The museum and its exhibits, including a brief video, are much easier to get through if you're a kid than a bigger museum like the Natural History Museum. I highly recommend it if you've got a kid who won't do well for 3 or 4 hours, but could tolerate 1 or 2.

I'm not a mall person, but I can always tolerate The Grove. It's an easy place to take the kid and just hang out. A good hint about food though: go next door to the attached Farmer's Market instead of the restaurants in The Grove itself. You can get a great meal that is relatively inexpensive. And there's a great variety of food there, so everyone in your party can get exactly what they want and not be limited by one restaurant menu.

Sushi Mac sushi is cheap, and one or two of their dishes (Sushi dynamite roll I think it's called) are tasty, but the quality is so low. It's worth an extra couple of bucks to go next door to Mishima and get a much higher quality Japanese meal. Also, the music at Sushi Mac is blasting loud, and the seating is a little annoying. If you go with more than one other person, it's hard to hold down any kind of conversation.

This is a good place to pop in and get a sandwich or salad, but watch out - seating is very limited and it can pack up quickly. Also, parking on 3rd street isn't easy, especially during the weekend rush. Joan's also has all kinds of prepared food to take home. I recommend the cupcakes - a bit pricier than the market but definitely better quality.

This is the best music store in town, hands down. Parking is a bit of a pain, but once you get in, you can lose an hour (or two) of your life. There's a small but decently stocked dvd area upstairs also. And don't miss the jazz room. They have a very cool collection of posters, and my girlfriend has threatened on more than one occassion to clutter the house with them.

Book Soup is a great boutique bookstore where you can find an ecclectic collection of books you won't find in other bookstores. If you're in in the neighborhood and want to avoid the big chain stores, go here. They have a good selection of books about L.A. architecture and history in stock. Also, if you're looking for a book they don't have in stock, they will order it for you.
