Mediocrity, and more mediocrity

I don't understand the appeal of this show in a town like LA. There are probably a dozen local acts/bands that are playing on any given night at half a dozen different clubs in town that are exceedingly better than any of the finalists on this show. It's no wonder "Vote For the Worst" does so well, but why hasn't LA caught on? Why does this town have Idol fever?
