I swear there is more to Burdick's than the hot chocolate, but I just need to chime in with everyone else and say: the hot chocolate is lethal, and you will die happy. It's the kind that gets nearly gritty at the bottom because it is so thick with chocolate. You may balk at the price of a small, but trust me, you may not want more than that. It's very, very rich. They also have tiny, charming chocolate mice and penguins and other treats and a few baked goods. Not a lot of seating, so come before the movies get out, or something. An awesome place to nesle in the winter.

Here is my experience at the Hong Kong: the food was terrible, the silverware was crusty and we had to send it back, and when my roommate asked for a glass of water, it came with a fly trapped under the ice, swimming for its life. The friends that ordered a scorpion bowl were very happy with their purchase. And then, oh my god, we watched a comedy show so funny we nearly all peed our pants. That sums up the Hong Kong pretty well, I think: come for the shows, drink the alcohol (it sanitizes and tastes pretty good) and eat somewhere else first.

Dado has many teas and a few sandwiches and baked goods. They have a variety of green, oolong and the usual black teas as well as a few more exotic kinds. The sandwiches are pretty good and there is a lunch special that includes tea, a sandwich, and fruit or chips; a good way to try something new. There is a traditional ginger tea on the menu that costs more, and I am here to warn you that it is literally a BOWL of shaved ginger- tons of it - in hot water, steeping like mad. It is SUPER GINGERY. It made me sad that day as I really wanted plain old ginger tea, and I got overwhelmed. Weeks later, though, on some miserable day, I found myself craving it. Go figure. Don't be afraid of anything here; you just might like it. Tiny storefront with wooden benches, but walk past the counter on the right and you'll find a few more tables.

Blue Fin often has quite a wait for dinner later in the week, but put your name in and poke around the shops in Porter Exchange. The sushi here is tasty and you should note the specials, like fatty tuna or spider rolls, on the dry erase board. The seaweed salad (all seaweed) is tasty, and they also have standards like shumai and teriyaki for the less exotic palates. Not a lot of ambience but this has improved some with the takeover of the former flower shop nextdoor.

Boston has really cornered the market on homemade ice cream (I humbly say) and Herrell's is a perfect example. They have the old standbys here as well as a few more exotic attempts, but mainly they specialize in your chocolate and oreo and black raspberry and sweet cream. They also have chocolate covered bananas on a stick, and they're better than I anticipated. Lots of toppings, efficient staff, and a long long line in summer that feels congenial rather than taxing. Open late!

Leave your arteries at the door (all right, we know you need them) when you walk into Rosie's Bakery. Their selection of baked goods is fabulous and mostly excellent tasting; the cookies are classic and buttery; the cakes are dangerous to even look at. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well. You can also get coffee and espresso drinks, which is good because you might need to rest after eating your mufffin.

The Enterprise in Central Square is tucked away off Western Ave; go past the police station and you'll see it on your left. This branch sometimes has better rates than its Davis Square sister store, and it also has better hours. Call after checking internet rates; you can often get a better rate over the phone, especially on weekend bookings. Friendly efficient service.

In spite of offers elsewhere I keep coming back to Enterprise. This location may not have the selection (or sometimes rates) of other Enterprises but you can't beat the location if you live in the area. See the rates online and then call; sometimes you'll get a cheaper rate over the phone. Closed on Sundays and early on Saturday so plan your booking accordingly. Great service.

If you're looking for cheese-saturated burritos, you've come to the wrong place. Tu Y Yo is a Mexican fonda, which means it's rather like getting home cooking. You won't find dishes like this elsewhere in Boston, especially those stuffed with grasshoppers. For the more cautious, there are plenty of seafood, beef and chicken dishes and a smattering of tasty vegetarian dishes (the spinach potato one is especially recommended). Sangria, wine and beer. Very crowded on weekends.

Chinook is so good at fleece, hats, mittens, boots and ear warmers that one might wonder how they stay open in the summer. That's when you can get water gear, though, and Tevas and biking maps. Reliable big brands as well as some charming smaller companies. Not cheap, but not ludicrous. Look for sale items in the back. Your Brown School Community Card (see my entry on that) gets you a discount here.
