Raven Used Books has moved in next to Planet Records and it's certainly welcome. With a careful, rich selection of literature and (vaguely and specifically) academic texts, it offers a lot in a pretty small space. They do buy books but call first to find out when to come, and check out what they carry so you know what to bring. Also a good selection of art books.

I love coming off the hustle and bustle of Newbury Street into the dim calm of the Gargoyle store. The owner does and sells reproductions of what the sign says: gargoyles, grotesques and chimeras. If you are disturbed by life-size replicas of the pieta, or gravestone carvings, you may not enjoy it here. The scale runs from very small to unsettlingly large here and the prices likewise. The place inside feels like a combination church, mausoleum and funeral home - and I mean that in a good way. Owner will gladly answer questions. Come here and check in with your own mortality, via art.

People usually refer to this little store as "the fairy shop" with good reason. It's tiny, and you might walk right by except for the intriguing window display and the bubble machine out front. The focus is narrow: fairies, candles, and unusual blue moonstone jewelry. The proprieters are friendly, and whether you're goth, fairy-smitten or just looking for vaguely creepy/beautiful old cards, you're in a good place for a gift or indulgence. Crowded if there are more than two customers.

The Arnold Arboretum is open year round, adjusting its hours by daylight. It spans acres and several types of terrain, from hills with great views to flat, topiaried fields. Trees and plants are labeled so you can educate yourself, or you can just follow the paths and breathe in the nature. Especially notable for its "Lilac Walk" around Mother's Day, when you can stroll amid several varieties of the fragrant flowers. You can walk your dog (but clean up) and ride your bike, but no picnicking here. Bring drinking water if it's hot, as once you're deep in the park it's hard to come by. Park on the street around the perimeter, or there is some parking inside. The Arboretum is beautiful even in winter when the trees are bare - just bundle up.

I confess, I sometimes come to DSW just to get a hit of their rockin' 80s music. Aside from that, it's soothing to stroll up and down their nine million aisles of every kind of shoe you can imagine: high end $300 Marc Jacobs pumps all the way to $18 Rocket Dog sneakers. The first floor is women's shoes and handbags. The second floor has men's shoes, all athletic shoes and the sale shoes. Markdowns happen each week here and the longer shoes sit, the cheaper they get. I've gotten some pricey gems here for as little as $10. Trends come and go, so don't give up if you come up empty the first time. Also the best place to get basic "I'm in a wedding" shoes - where else will you find this many varieties of black (or pink or silver) sandal?

This Marshall's is two floors and there is actually room to move - a novelty if you're used to the one downtown. The shoe selection is especially good, the petite selection suffers (as usual), there are some good coats and dresses and the men's department is pretty good. But really, the shoes are the best thing here. Sizes and styles in a better variety than downtown, and excellent brands.

Boylston Street is a great location for a Trader Joe's - near the T, opposite a Star Market (for more basic needs). This TJ's has a huge freezer case with its terrific vegetables, burritos, pizza, and emergency "company's coming!" foods. It also has a decent basic selection of the usual pet food, bulk nuts and dried fruits, snacks, breads, plants and vitamin supplements. Nice to have a taste of this in such a businessy area. No alcohol at this location - you'll have to go across the river for "two buck Chuck."

The Museum of Science is fascinating even if you think you couldn't care less about science. From the huge T. Rex outside to the actual model of the NASA space shuttle (into which you can climb!) it is just cool, cool, cool. Those of us who grew up with "What Makes and Ocean Wave Wave?" are always pleased to see the wave tank with the lever you can use to control everything. The electricity shows are scary and mesmerizing, the animal section is surprising, and the upstairs section on deformities might give kids bad dreams - or educate them. Pricey, but remember you can get free passes ahead of time at your library.

Pearl Arts and Crafts is huge and caters to art students, entrenched artists and young finger painters. Smaller items such as pens, markers, stamps, stationery and photo albums are on the main floor. Larger and more hardcore items, such as canvases, T-squares, googly eyes, doll heads, soapmaking supplies and fake greenery - as well as kids' stuff - are all downstairs. Pearl aims to sell everything at a discount and usually they do pretty good. A fantastic array of stuff, with staff that more or less knows what it's talking about. Look for signs signaling machines that can scan the mysterious item in your hand and give you a price.
