Stars on Hingham Harbor has a good selection of salads and basic Americana-type dishes with an upscale twist. It's not that expensive (sandwich plates under $10, entrees under $20) and you can always rely on good fish at this seaside location. They do breakfast every morning and brunch on weekends. It gets very crowded with families on later weeknights and then crowded and loud with everyone else on weekends - the bar section is a good place to meet friends. The beer list is truly stellar and they have a "beer club" card if you come here often.

I guess I should have known from the name, but this place is not really where I wanted to get cat food. The place is crowded and dusty and I wondered how old the cat food was. Having said that, the tiny selection of non-fish supplies was pretty good, with decent brands, and the owner was helpful. Open odd hours - call first if you're in a pinch.

Downtown Wine & Spirits is a great place to go for a gift bottle of wine when you have no clue what you're doing. Some staff members (the guy with the big beard comes to mind) totally know what they're talking about; I came in here for a bottle of wine for my dad, who has specific tastes, and the clerk gave me a mini-tour of Bordeaux wines, even opening a bottle so I could taste one. They also have a great selection of beer, wine, and exotic stuff like mead. There is a free tasting/wine class on, I think, Wednesday nights - ask the clerks. I love this place.

Thom Brown is a must-see if you are looking for fun, trendy shoes for a function or just to walk around in looking cute. The selection is fantastic and full of name brands; the prices range all over the place, from $20 all the way up to about $100 (boots higher). They usually have fun colors and a whole variety of different heels. The sales are terrific and worth a trip in and of themselves, or try the outlet just half a block down the street. I'm a 9.5, a weird size to most manufacturers, and I could nearly weep with the variety I get here.

If you follow women's fashion magazines and want to dress like what you see, run, don't walk, to Jasmine Sola. The Newbury Street store is a smaller version of their sprawling Harvard Square location but it has enough treats to be worthwhile. There are really no bargains here - you're paying for the label and to be up to the minute. Having said that, the colors are fun, the staff are full of snooty attitude, and the accessories are all sorts of delightful (even if you can buy similar stuff cheaper at H&M).

Toad always has live music and its proud, as it should be, to never have a cover charge. It's a tiny little bar adjacent to (and owned by) Christopher's Restaurant. The beer selection is good, the bartenders are friendly, and the vibe is just so damn good. You can poke in to see who's playing and end up staying for hours.

I always passed Sign of the Dove with skepticism that it was any good. I thought it was going to be all touchy-feely fleece hats and super-expensive knit scarves. There's a little of that, but turns out it's pretty cool. There is some gorgeous gold and silver jewelry, beautiful mirrors and frames, greeting cards, matted photos, ceramics, and a smattering of clothing and bags. Worth a look.

Zaftig's is always good, no matter what you get. It's an updated Jewish deli, with lots of booths and tables for parties of all sizes. You can get extensive breakfast here at all hours, including blintzes, latkes with applesauce, and plain old poached eggs with, of course, a bagel and schmear. This is of course a terrific place to get lox, but even the club sandwiches are good. The staff are helpful and friendly. Huge HUGE wait for brunch on weekends - when they say 90 minutes, they mean it. Leave your name and wander at Booksmith, then check back. Just have a snack before you come. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there's something here to please the most finicky relative.

Whether or not you love hanging out in cemeteries, the Mount Auburn Cemetary is a relaxing place to wander on a Sunday afternoon. Beautifully barren in winter, lush with plants and trees in warmer months, here you can discover it's not so bad to hang out with the dead. There are two ponds (one by Mary Baker Eddy's conspicuous tomb) with benches where you can rest, as well as other benches throughout. No picnicking, no dogwalking, and pay attention to the parking regulations. At the welcome center near the front gates you can get a map and play Find the Famous Person's Grave. Always restful.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is like visiting some art-loving person's crowded, huge house that happens to have a big garden inside. In fact that's what you're visiting, and it is really cool. You can go through the whole thing in an hour, but give yourself more time to relax by the courtyard and pause to talk to the employees. The security guards here seem to love working here and are full of trivia, especially about the famous art heist in the early 90s (the spaces on the wall where those pieces hung are still empty - very creepy). Fabulous outdoor gardens in warmer weather. Try to come when it's less crowded - there's a lot to look at in rather small spaces, and the whole place feels holy.
