Take the concept of a mall (everything you want, all in one place), apply it to food (Asian food, to be precise), put it IN a mall (the biggest mall on the east coast), and the result is Stir Crazy, which is famous for its wonderfully tasty stir fries, into which you can put just about anything you want! The stir fries aren't all that's good, though – there are many regular menu items (Japanese, Chinese, and Thai) that are just as delicious. Try the pad thai or the ginger beef, in particular – and don't forget to try a sweet Thai iced tea!

Easily one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to, Utsav is located between 46th and 47th Street, just west of 6th Avenue. The elegant dining room is suspended between buildings, so that you get a nice view of both 46th and 47th as you eat. It's a bit pricey (i.e. it's a special-occasions kind of place), but it's well worth the quality. Just watch out: when they say a dish is spicy, they really mean it!

I had originally posted a positive review of this place, detailing the good communication and service that they provide -- but my mind has changed as of today, when the guys at PR Auto tried to charge me for a repair BEFORE THE WORK WAS DONE. $1100. Being skeptical of the fact that they wanted to charge me in advance, I took the car out and brought it to another mechanic -- a friend of a friend, who has a widespread reputation for honesty -- and he identified the repair that needed to be done (which was NOT what the PR Auto guys had told me)... and did it for $25.
In short, do NOT go to Park Ridge Auto. I don't know how many years they've been ripping me off for, but it certainly isn't going to happen any more.
If you want a really good mechanic in the area, go instead to the Exxon station on Old Tappan Road, in Old Tappan. Ask for Mike.

This is probably my favourite branch of the country's largest bookstore. It's not small enough to be cramped, but it's not large enough to get lost in. This branch of B&N is located on the fourth floor of the Palisades Center Mall (right across from the AMC movie theatre), and it's a nice place to spend an afternoon. There's a café with tables and chairs set up, so you can sip a coffee and read through prospective books before you decide to buy. You can also browse through the music department which, though small, carries an impressive collection of harder-to-find titles. (Seriously: you wouldn't be able to find anywhere NEAR as many classical, jazz, or international CDs in Best Buy as you would in this store.) The staff of the store is usually very friendly, too, so feel free to ask them if you're looking for anything.

Probably the best health food store in the Bergen/Rockland area. Good Earth has a wide selection of the usual things you find in a health food store, from fresh veggies to more nutritious alternatives to snack foods like chips and cookies – but the real reason to visit this place is the juice bar. Fresh vegetable juices are made to order while you watch, with nothing but natural ingredients. (I ordered a carrot juice, and it surprised and pleased me when I got exactly that. Carrots, put through a blender and straight into my cup.) They also have fresh taboule, roasted asparagus, and other such salady things available by the pound.

It doesn't look like much on the outside – and hey, it doesn't look like much on the inside either. The décor is clean and simple, and the place itself is small… but the food is to die for. Classic Italian dishes are prepared to order by a VERY talented chef, and in all my years of patronizing the place, I've never had anything that I could call "just average." This is a great place to go for a family occasion – but if you're just looking for some quick take-out, they also have remarkable pizza and sandwiches that you can order to go.

This is city-quality food. Every Greek specialty you can imagine is on the menu, and everything is prepared to perfection. Great for take-out, but if you have time, sit down and enjoy your meal in the restaurant. The blue and white décor gives the place a feeling of spaciousness and peace, and every time I've been there, the servers have been very pleasant. Try the spanakopita – it's absolutely amazing.

If you're looking for something non-touristy to do, with very little money… don't go to Madame Tussaud's. I'm not knocking it – I actually had a good time – but just be aware that you're being sucked into a tourist trap and yes, those tickets ARE overpriced. But if this is your one and only chance to do it, or you want to go just to say you went, I won't stop you. You have to admit, it's pretty fun to pose with Samuel L. Jackson – even if he seems a little stiff.

This is place is pretty much the same as every other Irish pub in New York (of which there are many), with the exception of three things that make it stand out: (1) It's not on Restaurant Row. 44th Street doesn't get nearly as much traffic as 46th, so you're less likely to run into the loud and rowdy tourist types. (2) It's roomy! There are two floors, and each comes with enough space to put your claustrophobic grandpa at ease. And last but not least, (3) There are squishy couches on the second floor! And if you catch the place on a night when the second floor isn't reserved for a private party (as it sometimes is), it's all yours.

On occasion, this place will become a lively hotspot for theatre folk – but more often than not, it's pretty low-key. If you end up at House of Brews on any given weekday, you'll probably just find a handful of regulars, a friendly bartender, and a dark, quiet, clean place to relax for a few drinks. Recommended if you're out after a show and trying to avoid the tourist traps!
