I've never been a huge follower or fan of Brooke Shields, but after hearing that she wrote a book explaining her experience with postpartum depression, I knew I had to read it. After my second child was born, I was diagnosed with postpartum depression. Mine did not escalate to the intensity that Brooke's did, but I think that is because I knew what it was, and got myself help right away.
Despite the ill-informed remarks of people like Tom Cruise, clinical depression is a terrible and widespread problem. And of all the types, postpartum depression is perhaps the most neglected -- some people don't even know it exists, let alone how it should be treated. Others even believe it is a myth- a ploy on the mother's part to get more attention.
Brooke Shields' memoir "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression." is not a glitzy showbiz autobiography, but a wrenching look at one woman's struggle to have a baby, and then to regain her own happiness. This book shows that no matter where you are in the walk of life, every woman can be affected by postpartum depression.
There are parts of the book that one without a lot of money may not relate to- such as having a live-in baby nurse. But on a whole, this is a great book, that every one- women and MEN need to read. This is a brave, raw, and honest book that is MUCH needed in today's society. I am so pleased that a "star" has used her celebrity to reach out to America. PPD is real. And it's scary. And it doesn't discriminate. I appreciate this book and highly recommend it. Whether you have ever dealt with PPD or know of anyone that has, it is a truly honest journey through PPD and can only help to educate men and women everywhere.

In Undomestic Goddess, Samantha Sweeting is a lawyer about to be promoted when she suddenly finds that she has made a mistake. A BIG mistake. One that costs 50 million pounds. Thoroughly upset, she boards a train with no destination in mind. She eventually arrives at a couple's doorstep and is mistaken for a housekeeper.
This book is both funny and endearing. Another very enjoyable read by Sophie Kinsella.

"Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich explores the lives of millions of Americans that work for poverty level wages. Barbara Ehrenreich moved from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, taking the cheapest lodgings available and accepting work as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing-home aide, and WalMart employee. Doing this, she experienced what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck.
I thought this book was excellent and sends a great message to Americans-especially those who have never had similar jobs or who have had to really save money and know what its like to live in near-poverty.
Barbara Ehrenreich writes great and it flowed rather easily and nicely. Everyone should read this book to get a true glimpse of what a large portion of Americans are really doing to stay afloat.

One of my favorites, the Black Cow ice cream soda is a mix of Root Beer, chocolate syrup, and vanilla ice cream. Delicious, and your kids will beg for it.

Where's Mom Now That I Need Her?: Surviving Away from Home
I'm not sure why my mom chose to give me this book last year. Maybe she's trying to tell me something??? In any case, it's a pretty good book.
This book is divided into 6 main sections:

Recipes
It has 150 pages of recipes and includes blank pages with the title "Mom's Old Standbys" so that moms can write in their recipes.
Laundry
This section explains how to remove stains, how to use bleach, and lists several types of stains and what to use to get them out. It also includes ironing tips, and how to sew on a button.
First Aid
The First Aid section lists problems alphabetically for quick reference. It covers most common problems such as nosebleeds and sprains.
Illness
This section includes common symptoms and treatments and whether or not you need medical attention.
Auto Advice
This section has a lot of helpful guidelines for car care such as when to get your oil changed and general maintenance.

Slightly Engaged
I just want to say I LOVED the first book in this series, Slightly Single, and that book I HIGHLY advise anyone to read.
The second one was ok and I felt this one was just a complete mess.

I just want to say I LOVED the first book in this series, Slightly Single, and that book I HIGHLY advise anyone to read.
The second one was ok and I felt this one was just a complete mess.
Tracey is 25 and desperate to get married, and she is ready to leave her boyfriend if he doesn't give her a ring. She acts like she is an elderly woman in the book.
All she does, page in page out, is whine and complain about the fact that Jack hasn't proposed yet.
Needless to say, it all becomes very repetitive and predictable around page 30. As much as I loved her character in the previous books I couldn't help but think that she is pathetic and incredibly needy.
Don't waste your time on this one!

In "The Pink Ghetto" by Liz Ireland, Rebecca, needing to find a job quickly since her former employer Sylvie Arnaud suffered a heart attack which led to her state of unemployment; seeks work even if it means no feather boas on the job. She enhances her resume, which helps plus the magic of Sylvie as her last boss scores Rebecca an associate editing job at Candlelight Books though she has no experience with publishing, romance in or out of novels (the firm's prime genre), or editing. She does have a lot of enthusiasm and energy so she dives head first into her new vocation with plans to learn on the job rather quickly so that she can be the best at what she is supposed to do.
I don't want to give out too much information about the plot, but I will say it's basically another chick lit with great fun, back stabbing, friends and humor.

This is the first Catherine Alliott book I read and I liked it enough so that I'm going to read her book The Wedding Day next.
"A Married Man" is about a character that is so human and makes so many mistakes that most women should be able to relate to her. Lucy, who is warm and delightful, is always finding herself in compromising positions. The reader is kept guessing and wondering, will she or won't she cross that line with her married man?
The story wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be and it held my interest until the very last page, with interesting characters and an intriguing storyline.
