In an earlier review, I said that I felt that the Uptown Palladium was the best place to see a movie in this town.
Well, runner-up in that contest is the Star Southfield Theater. While it has been open for a few years now, it still feels new, with a big wide-open lobby that always seems to be clean and well-maintained. They have two theaters (#10 and #11) that are enormous, and that have all the latest digital-projector and sound system technologies ... you would be surprised at what a big difference that makes. The rest of the theaters are good, but #10 and #11 are really great. The seats are comfortable, though not outstanding.
The only real complaint that I would have about Star Southfield is that the staff there is only polite because they have to be. For example, I was at a preview screening for IceAge2 a month or so ago, that was scheduled to start at 11:00 AM. 11:00 is also the time that the concession stands were supposed to be open. So there were lines all around the place a couple minutes before 11:00, and the people "working" the concession stands were just standing around, not opening, because it wasn't 11:00. But at 11:01, they were like "Hi! Welcome to the Star! Enjoy your movie!"
But overall, it's a good place to see a movie.

As people who may have read a lot of my posts are aware, I watch a lot of movies, and spend what feels like a significant portion of my life at various theaters watching press screenings or promotional screenings for soon-to-be-released feature films.
I have to tell you, far and away, the best place around here to catch a movie is the Uptown Palladium Theater right in downtown Birmingham. The theater (as well as the Uptown Birmingham theater down the street) is owned by the Ilitch family, one of the daughters I believe, and the class of the operation seems to eminate from the top. The ticket people are friendly and helpful. The Customer Service desk is always staffed, and they do an exceptional job of resolving any issues customers may have. Even the folks working at the concession stands are nice. The theaters themselves are top-of-the-line, using the latest in projection and sound technologies. And the seats are very comfortable as well.
And here's a tip: if you ever have the chance to see a screening in Theater #8, you should definitely do so. That is the room where private screenings are held (like for parties or corporations or whatever), and the seats in there are the most comfortable ever. Trust me!

Earlier today, a fellow Bloomfield Hills poster wrote a favorable review for PineCone research, indicating that PineCone was an honest and reputable place, and a decent way to make $5 every once in a while. I agree with her recommendation, as my wife has been on PineCone's research panel for over a year.
But I also wanted to point out another terrific internet research / survey type of place. It is called Keynote Systems, and it's primary purpose is to get consumers to test the websites of some of their client-corporations, and then get those consumers' feedback on whether the site is any good or not, and whether it could be improved in any way. In the year-or-so that I have been signed up with Keynote, they have had me evaluate an internet travel site, a bank's site, a credit card company's site, and a pharmaceutical company's site. The evaluations were actually pretty cool, and it's kind of interesting to see some of the better sites, versus some of the worst.
Each evaluation that you do will take about a half-hour or 45 minutes, and for each evaluation that you do, Keynote will email you a $10 e-gift-certificate for Amazon.com. And I think that registration is almost always open, if you go to keynote's homepage, there's a link half-way down on the right that will let you sign up.

Earlier today, a fellow Bloomfield Hills poster wrote a favorable review for Buy.Com. She indicated that it is a terrific site from which she had bought books. Well, I wanted to offer my two-cents as well, recommending Buy.Com. As people who may have read a lot of my posts are aware, I watch a lot of DVDs, and many of those DVDs are ones that I purchased from Buy.Com. Their prices are indeed better than Amazon's in almost all cases, and shipping is free when your order totals more than $25.00. And probably one of the best things is that, if you use them for a while and then stop using them for a month or two, they will send you special offers to entice you to shop at their site again. For example, I hadn't ordered anything from them for a couple months, and then three weeks ago they sent me an email offering me 10% off of a single order. Really nice prices, when you consider that they are 10% off of Amazon, plus that 10% offer, plus free shipping.
The one negative point I would make about the site is that they don't have an overly-wide selection of older or more unusual titles. But if you are looking for a copy of "Walk the Line" and "Harry Potter" and "Chronicles of Narnia", then Buy.Com is the best I have found.
