Archie McPhee’s is way more than a store; it’s an experience. A great place to bring kids, out-of-towners, a date, or just to chase away the winter blues, Archie’s will make you feel like a kid again. All kinds of unique and weird stuff, from random imports, to fake mustaches, to garden gnomes await you there.

If I hadn’t made a resolution to cut back on beer-related calories, I would probably be here now. Old Town is a great place…nice and open, usually quiet, with a great selection of Belgians on tap and tasty (if a bit over-seasoned) bar food. It is really unfortunate that they don’t have full bar and wont seat large parties. The waitstaff can also be a little snarky (I have had both great and miserable experiences with them.) I hope they manage to stay in business anyway.

Tost might be my favorite Fremont bar. I love their martini drinks, and they aren’t too overpriced. The space does seem a bit cavernous, but if you can find seating it is really quite cozy. Tost is a really good music venue, and I have greatly enjoyed hearing music here on weekends. Highly preferable to the High Dive next door!

This little neighborhood Indian restaurant does indeed have a wonderful lunch buffet at a decent price. It’s also a great place to come for dinner. There is usually a wait, but never to long, and the dinner selection is really terrific. I’ve eaten truckloads of Indian food in my time, but I always see something new on the menu that I want try.

Thaiku is one of the best Thai restaurants in Seattle. First of all, their dishes are great and really unique…each one is a slight departure from the standard Thai fare that seems to be available every strip mall in America these days. The atmosphere is terrific, particularly in the little bar area in the back which is also known as “Fu Kun Wu,” has a separate entrance, and is decorated to resemble an Asian apothecary shop. The premise is a bit dicey, I realize, but the drinks are great. A few of them contain “ancient medicinal herbs” and the bar will only serve one per customer, due to their mood enhancing effect! Thiaku definitely enhances my mood, every time!

Kway’s Rendezvous is a great, quirky little bar. I went here to check out a couple of bands in the little theatre nestled in the back (this venue is also, appropriately, known as the “Jewel Box Theatre,") but the bar was great, and the place had tons of character and comfortable seating.

This dark, wood paneled restaurant is comfortably old-fashioned and the perfect place to take out of town visitors, (especially parents and grandparents.) The food is rich, hearty, and tasty, the seafood is super fresh, and the oyster bar is reported to be one of the best around (I can’t vouch for it myself, as I don’t eat the slimy little beasts.)

This is the kind of dining experience I dislike. Sazerac takes simple southern cuisine and overcomplicates it. The service and the wine list were fine, but none of the dishes I tried really knocked my socks off, and the restaurant itself doesn’t have any character. There are much better places to spend your money downtown.

While the Palace Kitchen is certainly an expensive night out for most budgets, it is also an extremely gracious one. The ambience is satisfyingly lush, and the space is interesting with its horseshoe shaped bar. The wine list is lovely. When you glance at the menu, you may at first be put off by the idea of paying such premium prices for relatively simple fare. But therein lies Tom Douglas’s artistry; he has a way of making the commonplace extraordinary, and turning out exquisitely balanced dishes.
Open late and usually busy, the service here is a bit less attentive than I normally expect from fine dining. Otherwise excellent.
