What they have done, just with wood, in the lobby, creates something beautiful than most places many people will ever visit. The bathrooms are nice enough to make one's home -- though albeit not if their present use were to be maintained. Their tea room has ceilings that must be at least 18' and is a great place to have tea after surviving some extremely difficult time in one's life, because everything is so perfect and beautiful. This is the point at which most people's money may run out.... But go, just to verify that it's real.

What are those little old ladies doing here? Do they want to pretend that they're in England? And what's with all of the tiaras? I'm sure that they could change a few things and attract a very different clientèle on Capitol Hill, but they seemed satisfied with their present group. And they do have delightful teas, and other things, and 'character'. It's a good place to relax and be a tiny bit pretentious for an afternoon.

It's one of those places with a few very stunning views that I recommend for photo excursions. It's a quite park in a quiet, affluent neighborhood, that seems like a safely kept secret. Perhaps a century ago it was merely a favored campsite miles from town where scouts and families would go on outings. Come at dawn for a quiet walk or at dusk, when the city starts to relax, breathe relatively clean air and at times get a glimpse of what life might have been like before some of our urban sprawl changed the face of Seattle.

They http://www.petes.cc/ have over 1000 labels in their stores, most likely the largest selection in the area. The prices are reasonable if you consider the fact that you're buying very expensive sour grapes. One draw is their classes, which seem quite interesting and which I admit that I have yet to attend. A bigger draw is that they also have tastings on Saturdays, complete with friendly staff people who can speak the language of wine snobbery.

It's a nice place to get plastered after a seeing a movie at the place across the street, or a play at the place a couple blocks away. The high ceilings and Egyptian motifs are a draw for me, though admittedly "cheesecake" isn't the first thought that comes to mind when I see the place; and it's not a good place for a 'cheap' date. They are one of those businesses that supposedly hires "secret shoppers" to spy on their employees, and judging from the level of knowledge and the politeness of their servers, I tend to believe that either that is true, or they receive a ton of training, or both. Don't expect to get a table immediately -- ask how long the wait is, go shopping, and come back in 25 minutes.

Juan Valdez http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2005-04-05/heydarpour-juanvaldez apparently got tired of serving his corporate masters to go it on his own. But their Seattle cafe is in Seattle's yuppie district. The irony is that many "yuppies" in Seattle have a social conscience, and would prefer to buy shade-grown organic coffees that benefit farm workers. It's a great place to get a mango shake, my personal favorite!

It's definitely not as elegant as Uwajimaya, and not as large, but it definitely does not cater to the same clientèle. Maruta Shoten is in the "industrial" district, and its demographic is "blue collar" -- they don't need fancy decor, but they do want to see attention to what is practical. And it is definitely Asian! They carry some things that people who think that they understand Asian cuisine (by virtue of frequenting Chinese restaurants in America) will not recognize.

I don't mean to say that Ruby's is owned by Johnny Rockets, but the similarities are uncanny. And strangely enough, both places seem to hire lots of high-school drill-team girls. Ruby's definitely has a kid focus that goes beyond model trains suspended from the ceiling, though that is more than enough of a draw for children to drag their screaming parents into a place like this. They also have the same sort of coloring thing that Red Robin provides for children. My recommendation: if your children love trains, don't take them within a block of this place, unless you like it too.

Don't be fooled by their "corner grocery store" appearance: they stock lots of interesting little snacks, new and interesting little things that seem to leap into one's shopping basket. You may THINK that you're going there to pick up some cream and vegetarian "Buffalo Wings" only to find that you've spent $100 on spiced papadam chips, spiced pecans, dehydrated banana chips, and other goodies. It is a great place to go if you find out that you're having a dozen people over the next day and you need to feed them, as their foods seem to make the cooking process increasingly easy.

This location is half the size of their main branch in Seattle, but has many of the Daniel Smith brand products carried by the other. Some believe that Daniel Smith makes the best paints, watercolor, oil and acrylic, and the best printing inks -- they were among the first to make printmaking inks in America. Like their location, they have classes and knowledgeable staff members. In this area, on this side of the lake, I don't know of a better location to start when searching for supplies suited to the professional artist.
