Sometimes when I travel I keep my expectations low so that I don't feel as upset when I'm disappointed. If you want to save a few bucks, I suggest that you do the same. Sometimes people have different standards of cleanliness: perhaps someone occasionally gives returned rental cars a few swipes with a dust buster, but these cars still stink a little bit like Greyhound buses used to stink before they cleaned up their act a bit. Leaving with the prepaid rental wasn't easy and I don't mean because of the obligatory attempt by a lot attendant to up-sell -- for some reason their version of the bill was $600 than the printout in my hand. Nearly fifteen minutes the problem had been solved, the manager said that someone at the office had entered a single digit in the code incorrectly, but it wasn't very easy to get them to admit that they had made a mistake. Half way through the trip the rear view mirror fell off; Alamo's "assistance" would have taken hours and I ended up using double-sided foam tape to reattach the defective mirror. After turning in the vehicle to the San Diego air port Alamo, to a lot a bit difficult to find -- because the name "National" was on it but "Alamo" was not -- I realized that I had left something behind. Less than an hour and a half later, when I called to inquire about the lost item, I was told that the car was already back on the road -- How, I wondered, could they have possibly properly fixed that rear view mirror and allowed the glue to adequately cure in such a short time period? Did they just skip the clean-up and safety checks or was somebody too lazy or confused to answer my question? Other than that, it was a nice comfy car, smooth ride, and cheap.

After the third defrost of the fridge in two weeks, it seemed time to bite the bullet and call Sears. They sent somebody with what looked like a twenty year old laptop who typed keywords into it and guessed at potential problems; Sears was going to charge nearly $420. I called around and someone who did not repair my brand recommended "First Appliance Service Team"; they fixed the refrigerator for less than $220, with just a day's notice. The technician didn't arrive in an nice neat uniform, rather, he looked like a guy who had been poking around appliances for a long time. He didn't guess about possible problems and insist on trying to fix all of the hypotheticals, rather, he checked for possible problems and deduced the actual problem. He could have charged the store's upcharge for a replacement water filter, but recommended "Reliable Parts" because they supply everybody. As an added bonus, he showed me a better way to defrost the fridge.

I don't like to hear young children scream when they lose a video game, especially when they lose due to no fault of their own, because of some computer glitch. But there are some games that children cannot lose: puzzle games, like "I Spy: Spooky Mansion Deluxe," which provides challenging puzzles without time limits, and best of all, without the game involving the kids shooting something! Scholastic provides a lot of educational products, including video games. I recommend their products for every parent who wishes to provide a better education for their children.

Anticipating the gentrification of Ballard? The members of their overworked staff seems to know what they're doing, unlike some large chains where those who have the knowledge are far removed from those who do the work. Their recipes are slightly superior to those of most other thin crust pizza establishments and the prices justifiably higher. Drinks also aren't limited to those found at every other pizza restaurant. The remodel of the interior has a definite slightly-upscale personal touch but it's a safe bet that most of their revenue comes from take-outs and catering.

If you know of some company that through unscrupulous or deceptive means aggrieves members of our society, please do us all a favor and complain! The BBB supposedly doesn't take sides, and though it probably doesn't want to annoy their corporate sponsors ("The Bureau's primary source of funding comes from the annual dues paid by its member businesses." http://www.thebbb.org/aboutmain.htm ), it does keep records of complaints. "The Better Business Bureau is a non-profit organization funded by BBB member companies. The mission of the BBB is to promote the highest ethical marketplace relationships through self-regulation, education and information. Every day the BBB receives more than 6,500 inquiries through our website and phone lines." http://www.thebbb.org/release.html?value=308 They also boast helping law-enforcement agencies when the occasion arises.

Many of us were led to believe that it's okay to eat foods with long ingredient lists that resemble the chemicals listed on a tube of caulk. In simpler days, grandma used to make lots of pies with Crisco and margarine, but experts say that this really misses the mark too. Flying Apron Baking Co. does what some consider impossible: make excellent gluten-free vegan baked goods without resorting to hydrogenated oils or wheat flours. Their Pastries, Cookies, Savory Items and Breads, Pies and Cakes will astound you with the quality of textures, flavors and more importantly, varieties. "Economics of Scale" isn't one of their advantages, however, so I hope that their recipes supplant what has traditionally dominated the market.

"GiftCertificate.com is a leading provider of comprehensive incentive solutions to corporations and small businesses. We also provide a universally appealing gift certificate, gift cards to hundreds of national merchants, and advice for personal gift giving." http://www.giftcertificates.com/ They're obviously making a lot of money by all of the "zero-interest loans" that they get by holding funds until people redeem these. And they provide great flexibility, when I get an online certificate from them I don't have to open a PayPal account (though I have one) and I can redeem it at tons of places. I prefer to decide how I will be "rewarded" instead of having somebody who doesn't know me make that decision for me.

I would rather take my chances in this postage stamp sized bakery http://www.tomdouglas.com/bakery/index.html than almost any other bakery in the area. The stunning and svelte servers behind the counter look like they don't really eat here enough, but don't be fooled: Tom Douglas http://www.tomdouglas.com/ is behind this operation and if is fame doesn't convince you that his food is great, he has his frame to back it up! You may already love their tarts, pies, cakes, cookies, rustic artisan breads, or the sandwiches, soups, salads et cetera, but if you "don't know yet" then I recommend starting with the famous triple coconut cream pie. Then you will know why none of the customers seem turned off by the lunch line.

Parents often seek kid-friendly environments. Frankie's http://www.frankiesredmond.com/ is a family-owned business that recognizes that the needs of parents require them to provide more than high chairs. Upon request, they give pizza dough for the kids to play with while they wait for the food to arrive. The booths help parents to politely pen in their children. Their fare includes things that children like to eat, and they sell pizza by the slice, so you don't have to take home pizza left-overs if you want something that your children do not want. They allow for online ordering http://www.frankiesredmond.com/zgrid/proc/site/sitep.jsp and have affordable prices.

The Washington State chapter http://www.alaw.org/ of the American Lung Association can help you to improve the quality of your air by sending someone from its Master Home Environmentalist http://www.alaw.org/air_quality/master_home_environmentalist/ program, a volunteer with a long checklist and suggestions. These volunteers are purportedly trained to know a little bit about "Second Hand Smoke; Moisture and Biological Contaminants (mold); Asthma and Allergies; Communication and Behavior Change; Natural Lawn and Garden Care; Lead; Toxicology; Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation; Household Chemicals; Cultural Diversity and Tenants Rights". For example, the volunteer may help to identify areas that indicate the presence of excessive moisture and therefore mold -- exposure to mold can be fatal for some people. In some cases, they can then refer you to professional specialists, for example someone with a moisture meter who can ascertain where exactly the water travels that accumulates to create the mold. "The Master Home Environmentalist © Program has been awarded a 2005 Children's Environmental Health Excellence Award! This prestigious honor is given out annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to programs and organizations that demonstrate effectiveness, innovation, and longevity in protecting children from environmental health risks." If there isn't a program in your area, you may ask your local chapter to start one http://www.alaw.org/air_quality/master_home_environmentalist/create_your_own_mhe.html or at least to refer you to someone who might be able to help.
