It's MUCH less crowded, and a nice way to possibly nurse a hangover...Anyway, you can eat outside, then move inside for the music and have some drinks. Or the other way around! The live jazz is definitely fun, the decor is inviting, and drinks are pretty good. The servers honored our strange requests (each of us ordered something like cranberry juice and vodka, orange juice, water, chocolate milk - EACH), which is always an added bonus!

First there's honkytonk bingo. Well it's bingo...while a country band plays. They are more traditional sounding country as opposed to the pop-style country on the radio (not that I mind that either). You can get up and dance, if you know how, or just swing your partner round and round, or whatever! One thing that irked me was that they don't take credit cards - cash only. You'd think most places would take credit these days. Oh well. I guess they didn't take them in the wild wild west either.

I went here last night to see the new X-Men (not a bad flick, by the way), and although it's small and kinda warm and dingy, I LOVED it. I am kind of sick of theaters that you get lost in, freeze...
I went here last night to see the new X-Men (not a bad flick, by the way), and although it's small and kinda warm and dingy, I LOVED it. I am kind of sick of theaters that you get lost in, freeze your butt off in, and have to practically dress up for. This no-frills cinema also serves cheap beer and wine, with of course the standard soft drinks, pretzels, candy, popcorn, nachos, etc., that you'd expect in the theatre, but for several bucks cheaper. They also randomly took a dollar off all our purchases last night, so you can't complain about that...Add good customer service to the list! And I like that it's not too cold in here, because I usually feel like I need to bring in a blanket to the movies. I think they might only have 2 screens, so not much showing at a time, but keep your eye on the schedule and it's worth holding out for the show you want to watch.

On top of that there always seems to be a pretty happening crowd, even on a week night. There is definitely a very diverse group of people here, hard to lump into any one category but very amusing to look at and watch!! The best way to describe the place is offbeat, but fun and welcoming, especially for the area. There's a pool table, and if you are in a band and have a CD or demo CD, there is one night of the week that they will play it there for you. I think it's Tuesdays. Whichever night Jack Daniels is on special. So just go every night until that night comes up.

The California Clipper is not much more than a long bar with neon lighting guiding its way into the back. Unless if you count the big projector screen in the back on a Tuesday where they show 2 of the most obscure movies you could imagine. Often movies from the 70s, or something off-beat or humorously sci-fi that make for good laughs and conversation starters if nothing else. I doubt anyone actually focuses too closely on the movie. The barstaff is nice and it's a very welcoming little stop in Humboldt Park. Parking is also very easy!

This is a fun little bar!! People here seem like fun-loving, energetic, down to earth people who don't mind having others around to share space with. I hear they frequently have live Irish music here, which is a refreshing contrast to the rest of the bars in the area that typically play the same 10 songs as any given radio station. The staff is friendly and helpful, happy to serve your drinks, and the decor is actually reminiscent of an actual Irish establishment. Or at least as far as I can imagine! I definitely recommend this place for either a weeknight or a weekend, as it seems like it would be a lot of fun no matter when you go.

This bar is one of the coolest bars in Wrigleyville, precisely because the typical bar here is cool in a trendy/tourist/frat/sorority kind of way, and on the contrary, the Gingerman has none of the typical Wrigleyville pretension and ignorance. Drinks are more reasonably priced (though I didn't say cheap - not quite that low), the staff has a good attitude, and other patrons seem to have a good sense of humor towards each other. You can always find a spot here, but it gets most crowded as shows from the Metro next door empty out into here. The people here keep it real, and there is free pool on Sundays and Mondays. But be warned, the bar is cash only so bring some along or pay the $2.00 to use their atm in the back.

The pros of Smart Bar are highlighted by the fact that there is seating available - the kind that you can actually sit on, not just watch others on as you stand around! The place is not big, but just big enough, and it doesn't get so crowded that you're like sardines. Just enough people crowd the dance floor so as to not make you feel self conscious with too much space around you, but you're not bumping into people either. No one here seems to mingle and hit on each other the way most wrigleyville bars/clubs are. This could be good or bad depending on your motivations for going out, but overall it seems like a good thing if you're sick of getting molested when you're just trying to dance.
However, at least on the night that I was there (Saturday) the music was just not happening the way I'd have liked. It was straight techno, which is fine, but the baseline or beat never changed - hours later it sounded exactly as it did when I first got there, and a little variety would have been appreciated. I felt that without a change in the music, my dance moves (already severely and embarrassingly lacking) wouldn't change and that alone made me self-conscious. But maybe I'd feel that anyway, who knows...as it is, Smart Bar attracts some very good dancers - expect a danceoff or two with some fierce (yet friendly) competition. It's nice to watch, even if you don't have the skills to join in!

I was also appreciative that they let me in and were courteous when I was late, and the ONE guy working there was conversational and all. But I was on my way running late trying to call the theatre to see if I could still be let in and the guy didn't answer the phone there, which is not good in a business! Also the bathrooms were very strange and felt like walking through a maze to get to, but I like the style of seating, and when I went it wasn't very busy so it was easy to converse and socialize while the movie was playing. Overall, not too bad.

I have a membership here through work so I frequently make returns for my boss, who doesn't always provide all I need for the return, so I was very impressed that they helped me out anyway and gave me cash for the item I returned, even though we had bought it through costco.com and didn't have a receipt. However I was not pleased with how obvious they made it that I was a pain and that they didn't want to deal with me or go through the steps of actually servicing the customer. I mean, if you work in the customer service department it doesn't make sense to have a bad attitude - at least pretend!
Other than that, the products and all that are ok.
