Kelley Farrell of Iced Dreams made the one-of-a-kind cake for our wedding. She was so open to our design ideas and so willing to go the extra mile for us. The cake was really the best part of our event! It was sooooo delicious too. We had different flavors and fillings on each layer and they were all amazing. We were hooked from the first time she came to our house to do the tasting and show us pictures. Her prices are also a bargain for the quality and level of service she provides. She actually hand-traced musical notes onto our cake to complete our design! She is super-reliable because she only commits to one or two weddings per week. This means that each of her customers gets her full attention. I can't say enough good things about her. Just make sure you book early!

Some friends introduced us to this classic family diner a few months back. You will feel like you've stepped back in time at least twenty years when you walk in this place. The owner greets you and vigorously shake your hand, the waitresses call you "hon" - its great fun! The menu is pretty standard breakfast/brunch/lunch fare. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. Don't expect gourmet, but the various incarnations of eggs Benedict are pretty tasty. This is a good place to bring kids too, even young ones. It is busy on weekend mornings, but they seem to get people seated fairly quickly. They have a small parking lot around the side and back of the restaurant.

Fabrics and Findings is a great resource for fabric and all the related supplies. They seem to carry mostly fabrics for decorating projects (curtains, upholstery etc.). I don't think they have any patterns for clothing or that type of thing. However, it is a fun place to browse and get ideas. They carry some really gorgeous fancy fabrics that a person with the right skills could do amazing things with. They also have a small selection of home decor items such as lamps, frames, vases, etc. They have a clearance area in the back where you can sometimes find a bargain or two. The store also offers some project classes that might be worth looking into.

Delta Sonic is where I usually gas up. The prices seem to be consistently a bit lower than the other gas stations in the area. I always pay at the pump, so I can't really comment on their convenience store type items. You don't want to go here around 5:00pm on a weekday, because the wait can be really long. I'm also not crazy about the layout of this particular station because occasionally people in front of you will block you in, and the exit/entrance are a bit inconvenient. Overall though, its is the cheapest gas on my way to/from work.

This is a nice, unique coffee shop in the Art Gallery area. The atmosphere is cozy and artsy with a Van Goh mural on the back wall. They occasionally have live music and readings too. In the summer there is additional outdoor seating. The prices in the typical coffee shop range. In addition to all of the usual coffee, espresso, cappucino etc teas, sodas and smoothies they also offer a menu of sandwiches, soups, wraps and desserts. Its a great neighborhood place to catch up with friends. They also sell Finger Lakes coffee beans by the pound.

Arena's is a somewhat unusual florist because they seems to have more decor than actual flowers. I love going in just to look around, or window shopping but I don't think I would actually go there if I wanted an arrangement. The arrangements I've seen from there are beautiful and often really unusual, but they are quite pricey. The window displays look like something out of a magazine, and are often whimsical. They usually reflect the season or an upcoming holiday in some way. I think this is the closest thing Rochester has to the Bergdorf & Goodman window displays in New York City. They also carry some potted plants, gifts, cards and floral supplies.

This small gift shop in Pittsford Plaza is a great place to find a unique gift. They carry handmade items from all around the world including serving dishes, linens, jewelry, textiles, wood items and more. Some of their items would make good children's gifts as well. The prices are reasonable, and a portion of the proceeds go back to support the artisans, which gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. The store is generally not too crowded, which allows you to browse around and take your time. There is ample parking.

I went to Simply Crepes with a group for a a celebration. It was a weekday lunch, and the place was very busy. The atmosphere and decor is beautiful with delicate homey touches. The entrées are made in a large open kitchen area adjacent to the dining room. The menu has many tempting offerings from savory and rich to sweet. I went with the "Turkey, Bacon, Tomato and Smoked Gouda Cheese Crêpe" and loved it. The dessert crepes are amazing too. It is a great place to go for a special but casual occasion. I do recommend making a reservation to minimize the wait time.

The Rochester Public Market is truly a gem. I go there almost every week in nice weather, and they almost always have good deals. I've heard that chefs for local restaurants also buy their produce there. I like seeing the people who (in some cases) have actually grown the veggies I'm buying and eating. Of coure, a good deal of the produce is also brought in from elsewhere, but that doesn't make a huge difference to me. You will find all the best produce in season, along with a smattering of other businesses selling cut flowers, plants, local wines, spices, clothing, cheeses, olives, meats, bakery items, incense and much more. The community atmosphere is pretty cool too, They frequently hold community garage sales, ethnic food festivals and other special events on non-market days. There are also a few brick-and-mortar businesses around the perimeter of the market including a coffee shop. They are open year 'round, but much more popular in the summer months. Parking can be tricky on Saturdays.

I have a membership to Sam's Club which I don't really use that often. There are a few items that I buy there from time to time (when I'm in the area for other things) because I know they are less expensive there. The meat department does have some good prices, as long as you have the space to freeze large amounts (or a big family to feed.) In general, I think these types of places are more useful to families of four people or more. You also have to be careful, because sometimes the items are NOT less expensive than what you would pay elsewhere, even though you are buying a larger quantity.
