Before I moved out of Denver I had the best tax preparer that I went to every year. Her name is Michele, and she is at the H & R Block location on Colfax. She is so great at what she does, that it actually makes doing your taxes bearable! She always caught deductions that I would have totally missed on my own, and saved me money every year. She is friendly and down to earth, and she knows tax law inside and out. You will be really glad you went to her instead of tearing your hear out, or getting ripped off someplace else!

Tea & Sympathy is a wonderful little authentic British tea house in the Village. I went with my husband and we shared the "tea for two." You get a multi-tiered serving dish filled with beautiful little finger sandwiches, scones, cakes, pastries - the works! Some are savory and others are sweet. At first you may think that it doesn't look like a lot of food, but you will definitely be full by the time you finish. You each get personal pots of delicious tea in your choice of flavors. Plan on spending a relaxed afternoon chatting and soaking in the charming, homey atmosphere. The service is friendly and excellent. This is a great place to take someone to celebrate birthday, or something like that. Also check out the tea shop next door for teas and goodies to take home.
Open Mon - Fri from 11.30am - 10.30pm
and Sat - Sun from 9.30am - 10.30pm

Husband and wife team Tom and Melissa O'Malley form the DJs company Affinity for Music. The provided music for both the ceremony and reception at our wedding last summer, and we were very happy with their services. They were very reliable, and dressed professionally. Their equipment is high quality, and they also carry emergency back-up equipment. It was great to have both Melissa and Tom at our even to keep everything running smoothly. They co-ordinated perfectly with our other vendors, even when our timeline was shortened by a rainstorm.
Since my husband and I are both involved in music professionally, we were VERY picky about what we would hear on our wedding day. They were totally open to our preferences and played exactly what we wanted. They also did a cute "Love Story" reading at the reception that told about our history together. I think the guests really got a kick out of that. Our guests are not really the dancing type, but somehow these DJs managed to get them out on the floor. We really had a blast, and would recommend them to anyone.

Were very pleased with the work done by Marilee Langner, who photographed our wedding last summer. We also love the engagement photos she took for us. There is a reason that she is so popular! She has a very sweet, easy-going personality and makes you feel comfortable (even beautiful!) while you are in front of the camera. She gave us our photos is in both digital and print format, plus the negatives are ours to keep. She caught so many little moments on film that we never would have gotten to see otherwise because the wedding day goes by so fast. She is especially good at catching cute moments with kids. Good photography is not inexpensive, but Marilee's rates are competitive with other photographers in town. She offers a number of different packages, so take a look at her website.

Rachael Peffer of Girls & Curls is truly amazing.
I hired her to do hair and make-up for my July wedding. About a month in advance I went to her home salon and she did some make-up and hair trials to find out what I liked and what would look best for me. She also gave me some great advice about products to try, and how to keep my hair and skin looking its best before the wedding. We also took lots of digital pics to compare different looks.
On the big day she came to my home and got right to work. She did hair and make-up for all of the women in the wedding party, and highlighted each person's best features. She made my normally stick-straight hair into a fabulous and elegantly culy up-do, and gave me the natural, subtle make-up look I wanted. She is very upbeat and friendly too; a great personality to have around when you are a little bit nervous. The best thing is that her work held up, and by the end of the night we all still looked good!

When I first walked into Wine Sense on Park Ave I thought it would be pretentious and intimidating. I was totally surprised! They had a wide selection of wines with helpful little wall placards describing the unique characteristics of each varietal, and telling you what types of foods pair well with it. We went on a Saturday afternoon and there were a couple bottles open for sampling. The staff member we spoke with was friendly and helpful. The prices seemed to be on par with other liquor stores in town, although I wasn't comparing prices on any specific labels. They had lots of bottles in the $10-20 range. A good place to check out if you want to learn more about wine.

I went to Our Name is Mud with some friends recently. It is fun to pick out your unpainted pottery piece and decide what colors, designs, stencils etc. you want to decorate it with. They have a nice variety of pieces to paint too - mugs, plates, vases, figurines, switchplates, napkin rings.... pretty much anything you could want. Many of them are appealing to kids too (little princesses and monkeys.) The place is very kid-friendly, and they have staff members ready to help and give you painting tips. There are also lots of instructional tiles available to show different techniques. My main criticism of this place is the price. You pay for the unpainted piece, the painting time, plus the firing in the kiln. My total for one mug came to about $26!! Still, it was a good time and the finished product looks pretty cool.

The CSO is a fabulous orchestra! I used to attend their concerts frequently when I lived in Denver, and I also knew a couple of the musicians. They offer a little something for everyone: pops favorites, kid-friendly concerts (gotta introduce the little ones to some culture!), standards from every era of art-music and even a few treats for 20th (and 21st) century music fans. They have an admirable presence and involvement in the community. Did you know they have recorded several CDs and even did the sound track to a children's movie? Boettcher Concert Hall's "theater in the round" layout does provide some acoustical challenges for the orchestra, but they are generally very successful in overcoming them. It also allows the audience to feel closer to the orchestra, particularly in the 'parquet' seats. The free summer concerts they offer in city parks can be a nice introduction if you haven't been to their concerts before.

I really love Aladdin's Natural Eatery. They have a nice variety of flavorful and interesting dishes on their menu, and they offer a lot of value for the price. You can even eat pretty healthily there (as you might expect from the name of the place!) Their floor plan is kind of unique with three levels of seating. This actually gives it a more private, intimate feel. The servers seem to be friendly and capable, and the atmosphere is relatively kid-friendly. I will definitely be going back soon!

For those who travel a lot, airports can be a huge hassle. The great thing about Rochester's Airport is that it is small, and everything is close together. I mean, the "satellite" parking lot is across the street from the airport!! Under normal circumstances, you can park your car and be sitting at the gate within fifteen or twently minutes (don't count on this around peak travel dates!) The new security layout seems to work pretty well and the air-puffing explosive detector machine is good for a few chuckles while you wait. The only thing that I don't like is that if someone brings you to the airport early and wants to wait with you there are no restaurants or coffee shops before you go though security.
