I went to Sugar with one of my most fabulous friends because it's supposed to the be latest SF hot spot. I really wanted to like it....the drink menu looks really fun and the bar is strewn with Hershey Kisses and other sugary treats. What's not to like, right?
Apparently, plenty. The drinks average around $9 each and the service was hands-down some of the worse I've ever had. Ever. The female bartender was so busy flirting with male customers, that it took a solid to 15 minutes to get served even though the bar was not even half-full, and when she did pay me some mind, she was outright hostile for no apparent reason.
Let's just say that my first trip to Sugar will definitely be my last.

Once again, I am singing the praises of a local, Mission 'hood cafe that features free wireless. This time it's Cafe Petra on Guerrero. I ended up there because it's right next to my local laundromat, but I
have returned more than once because it takes me back to my time in Moroccan and Moorish-influenced Granada, Spain. Sumptuous pillow-strewn built-in benches ring the perimeter of the cafe and provide a nice alternative to hard-backed chairs. The menu, hearty for a cafe, features breakfast wraps, salads, sandwiches and other lunchable eats, as well as baked goods and full array of coffee and tea beverages.

This cozy little bar/cafe on 2nd street between Bryant and Brannan, offers a decent drink selection (including an interesting assortment of yummy, flavor-infused vodkas.) The menu is best described as American-style tapas with a focus on comfort food, featuring dishes like macaroni and cheese, delectible little pizzas that are perfect for two, and a suprisingly good lobster quesadilla.

I have to admit, as San Francisco neighborhoods go, I'm not a huge fan of the Marina. When it comes to sweet little lunch spots and fabulous watering holes, I"ll take the Mission any day.
But yesterday my friend took me to Lettus Cafe at Chestnut and Steiner, and I have to say, it was worth the trip. First of all, when I went from vegetarian to vegan a month ago, I though I'd never eat cheesecake again, but there, glittering in the refrigerated case, I found a chocolate cheese cake with raspberry sauce and carmelized pecans, made with cocoa and silken tofu. And it tasted just like the real thing. Really.
The menu is a great mix of homemade soups, inspired appetizers (try the mango spring rolls or trio of hummus sampler) sandwiches (the grilled tofu and eggplant with vegan ailioli was amazing) and salads. The desserts, as mentioned above, are also fabulous, and they make their own iced tea in multiple flavors (my favorite is the mint.)
For those who diet isn't as restrictive they have smoked salmon and other yummy protein sources on the menu. Okay, I didn't try it, but the grilled salmon salad looked amazing. And back when I was eating fish, I was somewhat of a salmon connoisseur.
Check it out.

Just like the name implies, the walls at the awesome little cafe are all lovely brown brick, and sport local artists' and photographers' work. The sandwiches are yummy and generously stuffed. Salads are also generous and full of fresh ingredients like artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, cheese and other good stuff.
They offer breakfast in the AM (the egg and cheese sandwiches leave a little to be desired -- go for the bagel with cream cheese) and the coffee bar doubles as the later-night kind, offering beer on draft and a full selection of cocktails.
Oh and the staff is awesome!

This is one that won't disappoint. As possibly SF's most famous vegetarian restaurant, and at about $60 a person for dinner, drinks and dessert, I was all set to be disappointed. The view alone was almost worth it -- one entire wall of the restaurant is a floor-to-ceiling picture window with an amazing view of the Bay and the Golden Gate.
Then they served our meal and I understood why this SF institution is popular with both veggies and meat eaters alike. The entrees are flavorful, inspired and carefully prepared. The menu changes regularly to accomodate fresh, seasonal ingredients and the wine list is solid. Reservations are definitely a good idea.

Dog Eared, while not as big as some of the big boys, is one of my favorite used book stores in the city. They have a nice selection for their size, alphabetized and divided into browser-friend sections and the staffers are lovely and very knowlegable about their stock.
The store also offers a small selection of new titles, used CDs, alternative press and a decent kids' section.
If you're selling, they pay fair prices and take a wide variety of books.

This sweet little Irish bar is THE local Mission hangout for NFL season (or the sport of your choice) -- they have nearly every game on offer. The crowd is spirited, but laid-back and friendly with nary a knucklehead in the house like you may find at a larger sports bar. Which makes it worth the trip from another 'hood if you're looking for place to watch the game.
The staff is sweet, if a bit distracted at times, and the food, Irish pub fare with a twist, is actually quite good.
Saturday and Sunday brunch features everything from traditional Irish breakfast (for those who can stomach blood pudding) to all manner of benedicts and the Avoca vegetable hash -- a yummy mound of hash browns, sauteed veggies and goat cheese sauce.
All their condiments are house-made (and delicious) and in the winter they offer tasty little nips like buttered rum and spiced brandy.

I'm not one to learn my lesson the first time, so I guess it's not suprising that this past weekend it wasn't until AFTER I ordered that I was reminded, yet again, why I never go to Cable Car Pizza before 3am. And even at 3am, after a few cocktails on the town, when most of my taste buds have already packed it in for the night, the uber-greasy cheese and the bland crust with a vague cardboard aftertaste make me wish I had made the trek to 24th for a burrito.
Not a fan.
