Canvas is a funky café that doubles as a local artspace. The work of local painters, sculptors and other artists adorn the walls and the café hosts everything from local musicians to the monthly craft fair, Feria Urbana, featuring clothing, accessories and homewares by a revolving cast of local SF craftspeople.
The menu is extensive, featuring a nice mix of salads, pizzas, sandwiches, bakery treats and appetizers, plus coffee drinks and hot tea served by the pot. Wireless internet service, courtesy of T-Mobile, is available for a fee with your credit card.

Film Arts Foundation is a SF institution for indie-filmmakers. Classes run the gamut from documentary production to screenwriting, camerawork, lighting, animation and fundraising. The groups are small – conducive to individualized attention – and a mix of day-long seminars and weekly classes that last an entire semester. I have yet to run into a bad instructor. Most are locals on the production scene, with solid expertise and no shortage of good stories.
FAF members not only get discounts on classes, but legal services, health insurance and equipment rental, plus access to the FAF’s film library, invitations to screenings and networking events and a free subscription to Release Print magazine.

Big Lantern doesn't necessarily blow my mind, but when I need a fix of some good, old-school Chinese and dim sum, Big Lantern is a solid stand-by. The food is yummy, consistent, and plentiful, the service friendly, and for those of you vegetarians out there, they serve "mock meat" versions of all your old favorites. Plus the prices are super-soft on your wallet.

I usually prefer to talk up local haunts rather than national chains, but I'm making an exception for Surf City Squeeze because, well, I love their smoothies. They make their drinks using their own non-dairy smoothie base, that I'm pretty sure may contain heroin, because I can't get enough.
My favorite is the blueberry-banana smoothie with added boosts of protein powder and spirulina, but you can also get an au natural kick from the additions of ginseng, brewer's yeast, bee pollen and other boosters. Other SF locations include Powell Bart Station and Embarcadero 3.

I must admit, I've never had dinner at this restaurant on the Embarcadero across from the Ferry Building, but I've spent many a happy hour there. The happy hour menu features several great sushi options, a generous bowl of crisy, spicy french fries large enough for the whole table to share and lots of yummy, colorful and well-mixed cocktails. If you can score a seat at one of two window seat tables, you'll also have a nice view of the bay and the bridge.

Brainwash is the ultimate multi-tasking playground. While their main function would seem to be laundromat, washing clothes here almost seems like and afterthought. Washing machines vie for space with pinball and other video games, and the front rooms is a cafe/bar with beer on tap, and local musicians perform their latest hits.

The Darkroom is a little hole-in-the-wall Mission Theater that you might miss if you didn't know about it, but I'm telling you: get to know it. I recently saw a production of their original play about Emperor Norton and loved it so much, I went back the next weekend with a group of theater-snob friends in tow. They also loved it. The plays, long on heart and soul are staged in an intimate venue and suprisingly high production values for such a little place. Other recent productions incude Princess Bride - The Play and a stage version of the game and movie Clue.
Every Sunday at 8pm they feature "Bad Movie Night." Tickets are just $5 and include free popcorn.

Okay, so Tokyo Go-Go is a little on the expensive side. But it's good. Darn good. Some of the best sushi I've had in SF. Fresh ingredients, friendly sushi chefs and a creative menu, make it well worth a visit.
Seating is a bit limited and the wait can be a long, especially on weekends, so try it on a Wednesday or make reservations ahead of time.

I heard that Nihon had one of the best whiskey selections in the city, so I went down to check it out. Wow. Not only do they boast a formidable, by-the-glass whiskey selection, their sushi is some of the best I've had. And I love sushi. More than chocolate.
So the food and drink are amazing, but what makes
Nihon really special is the gothic-meets-Flintstones-meets-Tokyo-chic decor. It's dark and intimate, with cool lighthing, cozy seating, a white flagstone motif on the first floor, and a hardwood loft on the second, that makes even an average night out seem edgy, buzzing and like something fabulous is about to happen.

I took my boyfriend to Absinthe for cocktails for his birthday last year and instantly fell in love with the place. The whole decor is old-school Parisian elegance, with none of the attitude. The server was about as sweet as she could be and helpful with recommendations. The drinks are yummy, inspired and fairly priced. Great for a date to catch up with all the latest gossip with the girls.
For food they have a great oyster bar, and though I haven't had brunch there myself, I hear that it's pretty nice.
