Lincoln Center is one of the hubs of the performing arts in New York City. With opera, symphony and balle in residence and a regular selection of guest companies and special events, as well as a great threatre, a film festival, julliard and the performing arts library -- this is ground zero for the more classical performing arts in New York City. Stop by, pick up some brochures and figure out what you want to see. It can be pricey, but it can also be affordable. They also have great programs for introducing children to the arts.
Also you know that red carpet Nicole Kidman walks up in the Chanel ad? That set-piece is based on Lincoln Center.

Do you really really need a vinyl single of David Bowie singing Heroes in German? And do you need to talk about it a lot before you buy it? And do you want to feel like you had to work for it -- come here. Bleeker Bob's was a haunt of my high school years, and I discovered all sorts of great music here. If you still love vinyl and have ecclectic tastes from the 70s on, it's worth looking into.

All the cool stuff you used to be able to find at tower Records (back when it was cool) is now at Other Music, an unrelated store across the street that specializes in truly alternative music -- not the so-called genre, but little known bands in a variety of styles, folks on indie labels, and a great selection of world music. Decent prices too. Check them out.

While this is an incredibly cool place to go ice skating that's generally open long past what should be the end of the season, realize this rink is both very small and very crowded and that at peak times there will be long waits to get on the ice. The good news is they have seriously discounted skating during the weekdays towards the end of the season, and the ice has far less traffic then, so try it after Christmas.

My dad is totally obsessed with this diner. Tolerable service, great food and the perfect diner menu make it a model of tasty efficiency. When a tourist wants to see the real New York, just take them here, as it's more authentic than anything else they're likely to stumble on -- and more satisfying. Great pancakes!

Demask is a retailer of gorgeous leeather and latex (mostly latex) fetishwear from England. Their stuff is extraordinarily expensive, but mindblowingly beautiful. While much of the latext stuff can be described as corsets, this is more about being form-fitting that waist reduction because of the nature of the material. Sizes run very small. They also carry a limited stock of shoes including "ballerina boots" (essentially black leather point shoes with high heels attached).

I used to date a dude with a persian cat that we would get groomed here. They're great with animals, and the cat never seemed to mind their bathing and shaving of him (I stayed and watched once). That said, if your cat or dog is getting a lion cut here, before sure to ask that they don't make it too short, or they will go right to the skin -- the persian cat seemed mighty embarassed about this for a few days.

This is an absolutely stunning and very expensive antique store. Because it focuses mostly on nordic stuff, its items are not the ornate, overwraught stuff of most antique shops. These are large, stately and beautiful wood pieces. If you actually have an apartment large enough to accomodate them, your budget can accomodate the prices.

This store is great for even the most novice quilter in terms of fabric, supplie and support. Experienced quilters will love the selection and those who have never considered teh craft may easily be lured in by their vibrant windows (it's how I discovered it). Lots of fun for a thankfully not lost art.
