Divino has been here forever, and that's because its food is fantastic! Be warned teh restaurant has a piano player many nights and a singer as well some nights. They're not bad, but it's so entirely not my thing. Quiet is only to be found there Sunday through Tuesday. Tried the impeccable stuffed shells.

Heartland is a good neutral, but pleasant, environment. I'd recommend it for after work socializing, meeting people you haven't seen in ages (you know, when those pesky friends from high school send you email after ten years) or neutral ground for a drink with an ex. it's lack of emotional content, and more than decent food and beer make it ideal for all your quasi-awkward social needs.

Blue Water Grill is a lovely space (although if you want to be able to hear yourself on a busy night, make sure you ask to sit upstairs), with excellent seafood. They have one or two non-ish dishes to accomodate the picky, but the reason to come here is lobsters, oysters and harder to find fish like bara. Food is simple and without heavy sauces, making it perfect both for seafood lovers and those with special dietary needs. Pricey, but worth it.

In terms of healthyness, menu and staff accomodation of food issues, this Souen is comprable to its downtown sibling, but for whatever reason I've always hated the environment at this one. It just feels tired and depressing. And while it's a good resource for many on special diets, there are better resources with better environments in the area.

Souen offers health-conscious Asaian cuisine. The restaurant is mostly, but not entirely vegetarian (they do offer shrimp tempura and serve other fish, there is not chicken or beef on the menu), and the staff is very helpful about any dietary concerns you may have. Good for healthy, light, delicious eating in a casual environment.

This fantastic Brooklyn bar has lots of beers on tap, a decent selection of scotch, a fantastic staff and a good jukebox. It's from he folks that brought you Riverrun (a great bar and restaurant in Tribeca that got priced out of its space and closed). If you miss the vibe there, this is the closest you'll find. They don't serve food though, but it is easy to get to from Manhattan and easy to find even for those not familiar with the area.

Ah, The Russian Vodka Room. It is rather exactly what it says. While there's a bar up front, most peopel sit at restaurant style tables with their friends and drink lots of vodka. The selection is amazing especially if you're into flavoured vodkas or trendier vodka mixed drinks such as a sour apple vodka martini which really should just be called something else, because how is that a martini other than the glass? Remind yourself to get up and walk frequently so you can recall just how drunk you are before you go for the next round.

If you need photographic equipment in New York City, this is the place to go. From cameras to reflectors to slide scanners to every sort of paper you can imagine for your photo-quality printer they have it. The store is chaotic and runs on a somewhat bizarre system (note the green bins of goods being moved through the store overhead. They are closed for all Jewish holidays (this means they are closed Friday afternoons and Saturdays as well). But the prices are great. Do whatever research you can before you go -- the faster you can get in and out of this place the happier you'll be.

I like the food here, and especially the limeade. It's cheap, it's fast, and all sorts o good things. Unfortunately, in the style of style it also has the most uncomfortable seating (tables can be communcal, which I don't tend to mind at other restaurants) both physically and logistically of anywhere I've ever been. And the accoustics are terrible. Only eat here if you don't want to hear what your dining companions are nattering on about.

The sushi here is excellent, but it's the tempura that's a real standout. Light and flakey and not greasy, it can be ordered by specific pieces as well as an entree or appetizer. A bit pricier than other neighborhood places, and with a decor that's simple and elegant, but makes the place look a bit too like starbucks, Neo is a pleasant, high-quality dining experience. They also often have good quality toro available, a plus in my book for any japanese restaurant.
