Alt.coffee is one of New York's original cyber cafes. It has survived, where others haven't, because it's comfortable and cozy, teh way a cafe should be, as opposed to cold and metallic and "cyber." They've got a limited selection of baked goods (but they're very good) and fruit juices as well as coffee (which I can't comment on because I can't have caffeine). You can log on using their computers or bring a laptop to use their wireless connection. A great place to hang out or study, regardless of whether you are using their internet services.

Yes, this is Junior's of Brooklyn fame, just in Grand Central. There's both a sit-down option and a quick food counter. As I really dislike Junior's food, save yourself time and money and just go to the counter and get yourself some cheesecake. Since a single slice has enough calories to keep you going for about a week, you don't really need the meel before it anyway. The plain is best. All the sugary fruit syrups just mask its glory.

I think Junior's is vastly overrrated. Yes, the cheesecake is very very good, but people act like it's the only cheesecake that ever was or has ever been. as for the rest of their food, I'd say I'm less than underwhelmed. If you wan tthe epxerience, go see something at BAM and then stroll over to Junior's and stick with the plain cheesecake. Everything else is just too gloopy and gloppy to actually taste like anything other than a heart attack.

Datavision, like all big computer stores, is somewhat evil. It's crowded, confusing and the sales peopel are agressive because they work on comission. That said, as far as I am converned, these people are miracle workers. You need something that's no longer in production an hour ago or your boss is going to kill you? If anyone can find it Datavision can. Take your product need emergencies to them.

How can I possibly be the first person to review Yankee Stadium. Since it's likely the stadium will be replaced soon, go now while you still can. Even if you think you don't like baseball that much, there's nothing like seeing it live, and when you come out of those tunnels that lead into teh stands and see the field for the first time, it's utterly amazing, especially for night games. Sure, the hotdogs are expensive and the beer is bad, but there are few better ways to spend a lazy afternoon or evening with friends.

The cheapest, best view of lower Manhattan can be found by riding the State Island Ferry. Designed for commuters, but also full of broke high school students on dates, the ferry is an oddly charming part of New York City. It's also free. New York became a great city because of its water access, why not get on a boat once in a while?

Has anyone ever seen a Zaro's outside of a train station? This bakery is so specific to New York's transit hubs, that it is for me, and probably tens of thousands of New Yorkers the taste of Metro North. Cookies can be very dry, almost dusty, but they have a specific peculiar sweetness that's oddly satisfying. Everything here is supersized -- from the cake slices to the scale of teh cookies. Their holiday (particularly halloween) cupcakes and cookies are especially fun and vivid to bring as a gift for your hosts.

In many ways this is the deli that time forgot. Generations of New Yorkers haven't though. This place is fantastic and is the epitome of New York, delis and pastrami. It's worth a major trip out of your way to experience, and once you do, you'll keep coming back for more.. Expect lines at peak times.

I suppose there's some sort of logic that the worst Blockbuster I've ever been to is next to the worst Kinkos I've ever been to. This Blockbuster suffers from trying to serve a neighborhood at a crossroads, and manages not to serve either part of the neighborhood well. It has lots of mainstream hollywood movies dubbed into Spanish or with Spanish subtitles. This would be totally great, if they weren't constantly getting mixed in with the English-language version of the films. I've also wound up with unplayable disks from there a whole bunch of times. And they've never been courteous when it comes to correcting the problem.

Old Navy is great for summer clothing particularly, because who wants to spend a lot of money on something you're just going to sweat in? The stuff is stylish, if you're into a mainstream casual look. Occassionally a piece or two that's really interesting will show up, but mostly it's for clothing staples. Their underwear is really comfortable though.
