On Third Avenue, Gracious Home is actually two stores -- one beautiful and spacious selling expensive furniture and lamps and so foth. The other cramped, and not as cheap as it should be, selling more basic household items from shower curtains to doorknobs to bath towels. Confusing and disorganized, neighborhood residents swear by it, but trips to KMart and Home Depot could net you the same stuff for less money.

This is a quasi-healthy (but not really) fast food chain with delicious grilled chicken either in a sandwhich, in a salad (my favorite, as it also has goat cheese) or over rice with teriyaki sauce. quick cheap and relatively wholesome, this isn't a bad place for lunch on the run. Those wil allergies beware, peanuts turn up on the grilled chicken and in the salads all teh time. If you have a peanut allergy this place is not safe for you.

When I was a kid I came here for teen heart-throb mags and trashy science fiction paperbacks. Now, I come mostly for the good selection of pens and casual stationary and teh huge selection of cards. But they still have a huge array of magazines -- fashion, music and more, and silly paperback books of the sort you normally only buy in airports. It's a good resource if you're in teh area and I'll always be nostalgically fond of it.

The slider is an American tradition we're not that familiar with in New York and this part of the country in general. It's a small bite-sized burger, sort of like you get at White Castle. But this isn't White Castle. This is fresh, greasy, non-chain fast food sinful delectability. They even have veggie burgers with a honey mustard sauce. Get a few and enjoy!

Alonti is another one of those random midtown lunch places. This one specializes in making pasta fresh to order. Choose a type of pasta shape, a sauce, and extra ingredients (for an extra price) and it'll be tossed together fresh and hot on the spot. It's pretty good and prices start at $5.95. Inside, it's like a Starbucks if you want to eath there, but most peopel bring it back to their offices. Their garlic bread is terrible though.

Here is a long-standing part of the creative community of New York City. Although the theater can be hard to find and seems divey iin lots of ways, I have see and auditioned for lots of great work here. Many shows here have a political voice or an avant garde production quality. Everything from plays against the Iraq war to productions of Jacques Brel's Baal are staged here, and it's often work the $10 - $15 gamble on a ticket to see something amazing.

I studied here for years. Of course, only Graham technique is taught, but the dance training is fantastic, and utilizes the body in a way that no other technique really does. That said, as much as it will make you strong, it's also harder on the body than many types of modern dance, and so should be considered carefully based on your strengths, goals and abilities. Children cannot train here until they are at least 11 -- this speaks both to a need for physical development as well as the emotional content of Graham's work. The school and technique has really struggled since Graham's death, but her choreography and technique is a unique part of American cultural history and must be preserved. Consider taking a class here.

Peccadillo Theatre Company is the resident company here, although the space is often rented out for other productions. This is an opportunity to see high-quality, off-off-Broadway theatre. A few years ago I was part of a production of Counsellor-at-Law here that later moved to off-Broadway and got rave reviews. It's a great bargain and a great place to work as an actor. I will say this though, the performance space has several columns in the middle of it. A good design team can handle this well, but between that and some very difficult accoustics it can be a challenge to work in.

Shw's here aren't always successful or what you want them to be, but they are always interesting. A long-time part of the downtown arts scene, Jean Cocteau Rep, which is resident at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre, always casts great actors you've never heard of in classic shows. And while the theater could use a serious rennovation (especially the seats) it's a pleasant and historic environment in which to see a show.

I'm mixed on bebe. On one hand, a lto of there stuff is very stylish and fun. On the other, it's pricier than it should be and a lotof their stuff is also very suburban trashy. It's a store to visit often yet buy from infrequently, and who really has the time or patience for that. Especially good for skinny girls (their clothes run small and fit tight) and/or those who like to say it with breasts (the clothes are definitely cut to emphasize that part of the figure)..
