Sonic Boom in Ballard is excellently located, near Archie McPhee, Cupcake Royale, the Majestic Bay, and many good restaurants and bars. They have a great selection of CDs at reasonable prices - I got the latest Sleater-Kinney there last year for $10.99. Occasionally they have amazing sales too. You can also come to Sonic Boom for vinyl, band posters, fliers for shows, and music publications.

A small store that holds a lot of musical and electronic gear. The highlight of the store is the large collection of used CDs and vinyl. They also carry used video game consoles and games at decent prices. Finally, they buy, sell and trade guitars - a good opportunity if you're looking to trade up or down or sell your guitar. The store is kind of grungy feeling, but currently being remodeled (not sure what they are doing to it yet).

This popular lunch destination features cheap ($3.85-$5.75 for different size bowls), delicious pho with generally fast service. If you're vegetarian, they offer a tasty 100% vegetarian pho with vegetable broth and tofu. They also have a wide variety of meat pho, including beef, chicken, and pork. You get a free cream puff with an order of pho. If you are going with several friends during lunch hours, be prepared to sit separately or wait for a table - it gets really busy. If you go alone, you will end up sitting at the middle tables close to other people who will mostly be eating alone as well - it's close quarters, something I wasn't quite used to. They can also give you pho to go, with separate containers for broth, vegetables, and tofu.

The one time I was here, there were only two waitresses for the whole restaurant, plus assistance from the kitchen staff, and it was very very busy. I ordered a bubble tea which I never received - I don't think drink service is their priority here. Nevertheless, I recommend going there for the pho.

This cozy cafe was one of the first places on the Ave to serve bubble tea. They also offer coffee, espresso, juice, a variety of regular tea, pastries and other food. The atmosphere is quiet but conducive to hanging out with friends as well as studying, as it has small moveable tables, a couch, and padded bench seats. It is closed on Saturdays.

Now that the smoking ban has gone into effect in Seattle, I no longer have any gripes about the Gyrocery. They have excellent falafel (and my meat-eating friends enjoy their gyros and other meals made with halal meat); prices range from about $4 for a small meal to $7+ for larger or combination meals. Expect to wait about five minutes for your meal, and they will bring it out to you at your table in back. The seating area features a canopy-covered area with pillows and rugs as well as tables, perfect for lounging with your food or drink.

The food here is delicious. Entrees cost around $10-13. I got a dish there, ashak, that was rather like ravioli - it was creamy and saucy. They also have an absolutely divine custard dish that you should try. The waitress warned me against the dogh: she said it was salty. I still haven't tried it, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked it. It's for the more adventurous, I suppose. The atmosphere is subdued, the dining room lit often with candlelight more than overhead light. I think it would be a nifty place for a date - it's the only Afghan restaurant in Seattle, after all.

The last independent food cooperative in Seattle, Madison Market (formerly Central Co-op) is still going strong. They have a large organic produce section and a good selection of organic groceries. There is a parking garage above the store and an elevator to help you get your groceries up there. They are on the 12 bus line and several blocks from the 48 bus line on 23rd and Broadway in the other direction.
They have also been quite generous with produce donations to community groups I'm involved with who cook meals for events. I appreciate their community spirit.

This cafe and den of delicious desserts on Market Street is quite unique. They sell cupcakes as a gourmet dessert - rich creamy frostings and moist cake make for possibly the best cupcake you've ever tasted. Each one will run you over $2, but they're an ample size, and the quality definitely warrants the price (just think of those awful supermarket cupcakes that are 6 for $3.99).

This market has excellent locally and internationally grown produce. If you live anywhere near NE 65th and 15th Ave NE, this market should be your first choice for fruits and vegetables - supermarkets just can't compete with their quality and price. There are some organic options here as well, but I especially like getting the locally grown food - it's nice to know my food didn't have to cross an ocean just so I could eat it. There's some on-site parking and it's on the 48 and 71/72/73 bus lines, and near the 66 bus.
