I enjoy the Tandoor restaurant. The food is good, and the staff are friendly and polite, not either overly obtrusive or distant. I especially recommend the mutter paneer, which is a curry, vegetable, and paneer cheese dish. The sauce is flavorful and a bit creamy on the tongue, and the onions and peas complement the cubes of paneer. Their naan is pretty good, and their chai tea is pretty much unsweetened, so you can adjust the sweetness as you wish or just drink it plain (and it's pretty good that way too). Most entrees are $7-9.

I've been going to the Continental Store since it was down the block past Scarecrow, closer to 50th. They don't have as many items now as in their old location. The new location is much more visible and appealing, with big windows so you can peer in as you walk by. There is a lot of specifically German food here, but you can get some food from other European cultures too. Highlights for me have been the cheeses and the pfeffernuesse cookies. They also carry cake and pudding mixes, crackers, cookies, deli items, and other snacks. Check it out!

Half Price Books is crammed with books, calendars, CDs, DVDs, and computer games. The new books are at least half off the printed price, and you can often find even better deals in their front displays. They have books on pretty much every subject on their two floors. They also have a non-intimidating book buying process: you just leave your books with them, go look around the store for 10 minutes or so, and you come back and they tell you what they can take and how much they can pay you. Granted, they don't often offer very much for your books (10-20% of printed price), but I've found that they often take books that other stores won't touch.

The first time I went to the Galway Arms, my friend and I ordered six different drinks and sat down to drink them one by one while an Irish band played in the corner. The ambience was terrific - good drinks, good vibes, small pub, Irish music. The second time, the bartender gave me and my two friends each a free shot of his favorite drink. I quite frankly cannot remember what the drink was, but it was delicious. On later visits, I've sampled the food (chips, excellent, hummus plate, excellent) and the service has continued to be terrific. They always seem to make mixed drinks strong, so it's a good value for your money. I've also heard great things about the happy hour at the Galway, although I've never been there during that time. Don't even bother with the Irish Emigrant across the street - this is an Irish pub that knows what it's doing.

Caffe Vita has a polished ambience, with lots of wood, dark trim, and orangey walls on its two floors. Indie rock standards like Modest Mouse and Bjork played a little too loudly over the speakers to have a decent conversation. I haven't been there enough to really comment on the drinks, although I will say that their hot chocolate is pretty good. There weren't really any outstanding features of the cafe that I could point out, so I'd have to say that if you like your coffee shops on the non-quirky/funky side, this would probably be a good place for you.

Mighty-O Donuts has the best donuts ever. They're made with no trans fats, 100% vegan products, and certified organic ingredients. They have some creative flavors too, including pumpkin and raspberry chocolate. I recommend you go in the morning - in the afternoon their selection is often limited. One donut will cost you a dollar - a great price for such a delectable dessert or breakfast. Mighty-O is near the 16 and 26 bus lines.

The Essential Bakery Cafe is almost perfect. They have awesome cafe food (the tomato and cheese sandwich is just amazing; the desserts are exquisite; the drinks are well-made) as well as a full selection of Essential Bakery breads. My only quarrel is with the price of the sandwiches (almost $7 for a whole one) - but it's worth indulging now and then! Make sure you get some bread to take home; they make some of the best bread I've ever eaten (especially the challah and olive breads).

The PCC in Fremont is my favorite of their stores. It has a lot of windows along the south and west sides, and the natural light really improves the atmosphere. They have a decent-sized bulk food section (although I still wish it were bigger) and a wide variety of deli selections. The packaged groceries are also diverse and numerous. I strongly recommend buying a PCC membership - if you shop there even just once a month it will probably pay for itself in a year or two in member discounts, and it's good for life.

I went to Tawon Thai last summer. The inside seemed really dark to me, both in terms of decorating and in terms of the artificial light. It's only got windows by the door - maybe it is better lit at night. However, I did enjoy the phad thai I ordered - the sauce had a good flavor and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. The service was friendly and reasonably prompt considering how busy it was.

Sonic Boom in Fremont has a great selection of CDs at reasonable prices, in a friendly and upbeat atmosphere. They've got vinyl, band posters, fliers for shows, and other items here too. During the Fremont Fair, they often have awesome sales - I've gotten good CDs for $1-3. They usually seem to have a bargain bin at other times too. They've packed a lot of music into this store, so check it out!
