I like the U-District Petco more than the Crown Hill Petco, which isn't saying much. When I pointed out a gerbil that was injured, they attended to it immediately - something I wasn't really expecting given the stories I've heard. The prices there are really crazy, and a lot of the small animals are just packed into their cages - or have clearly been waiting many weeks to be sold and are not going to socialize with humans well. Please go to an independent pet store if it's at all possible.

I've enjoyed the few times I've been in Trabant, especially the performances. They have bands there regularly, and I even saw a play there once. I haven't been so impressed by the open mic though - a mostly standard selection of poetry (I got spoiled, I think, by the excellent one hosted at Cafe Allegro at the College Inn a few years back). The chaiwallas are tasty, if kinda pricey, but they have a broad drink selection, so you're not limited to chai by any means. They're open early (6:30 on weekdays, and I think 7 on weekends), great for those of us who occasionally or regularly work early in the U-District.

I saw one of Guitar Wolf's last shows at Chop Suey. It was a cold night but it was way too hot and crowded inside - being pushed up against dozens of sweaty bodies before the bands have really begun is not much fun. I haven't spent much time in 21+ venues, so maybe this is just my inexperience talking, but I really wished that people would stop spilling their beer. Partway through the show someone knocked down the fire extinguisher or something and a putrid smell made its way through the room. People cleared out and the band (bless their hearts) just kept playing, but I didn't hear for maybe ten minutes what had happened, and the staff didn't seem all that concerned or eager to find out what was going on either.

I haven't been to this place since it was renamed El Corazon (Graceland is such a better name), but I have many fond memories of concerts I've seen here. The Ataris in particular were fabulous. The place is tiny, though, and not very well laid-out. Heaven help you if you need to get out of the pit during the show - or even just out of the back of the room. I wouldn't say don't go here - they do get some good bands in- but just be aware of its many spatial limitations.

The Showbox is a good place to see a show because it has space for all types of showgoers - the drinkers, the moshers or dancers, the stand-arounders, etc. I saw The Faint and Bright Eyes here last year, a sold-out show, if I remember correctly. The place was pretty packed; the bathrooms were in the back corner and required quite a bit of manuevering to get to. I did really appreciate having some space near the back to sit down for a while later on - even if it was on the floor. The Showbox is host to a variety of music, so it behooves everyone to check out its listings.

I just went to Bombay Grill last night for a special occasion, and I was really impressed.. The service was good (they watch your water glasses like hawks, though), and the staff was very nice. To drink, we had a mango lassi and a chai. The mango lassi is practically a dessert, and although served in a very tall and skinny glass, is worth the price. The chai, on the other hand, came unsweetened but with a small box of sugar and sweeteners, which I really appreciated. We had eggplant bharta and malai kofta for dinner, both of which were spicy and flavorful, and enough to take some home with us. Finally, we splurged on the dessert platter ($9.99) which came with baklava, a slice of cheesecake, and a sweet carrot dish (I forget the name). The desserts were good, but I don't think I would get the platter again; it wasn't as substantial as the waiter implied, and I don't usually buy desserts in restaurants anyway.

I've been to Little Thai many times over the past seven or eight years, and it's always been quite pleasant. While it is frequently packed for lunch, there isn't much of a dinner rush - but then, it's cheaper at lunch time too, and you get basically the same amount of food (but a little cup of soup or salad comes with your lunch). The spicy noodles and phad thai are both pretty good. The big noodles with Thai sauce have been recommended to me a lot, but I've never gotten around to trying them. The pumpkin custard for dessert is also good, as is the black sticky rice pudding.

I used to go to a regular meeting at Cafe Solstice and one of the reasons we decided to meet elsewhere was because it was often too loud to have a good conversation. The coffee and tea are okay, not amazing, as are the prices. They do have a pretty good chocolate chip cookie, if I recall correctly. I think you'd probably do better to go to Cafe Zoe or Cafe Allegro, both quite close to Solstice, if you're looking to get work or a conversation in - the atmosphere in those two places is much more chill anyway.

It's not an "Expresso" bar, but a great espresso and coffee shop on the alley between the Ave and 15th, just north of NE 42nd. There are three separated seating areas, one in the same room as the food and drink counter, one in back, and one upstairs (go outside from the door between the two lower floor seating areas, and take the door upstairs). Cafe Allegro has a comfortable atmosphere and delicious Fair Trade Certified coffee. They also serve breakfast in the morning. The wifi is temperamental, so if you're looking to settle down with your computer here, you might want to try the connection before you get your food or drink.

I haven't eaten at Zao, to be honest. But I did take a look at their menu, because I was having lunch with my dad and we went there first. All of their "vegetarian" dishes have fish products in them (presumably fish/oyster sauce), and there are only 2-3 vegan dishes. It's kind of ridiculous in Seattle for an Asian noodle house not to have more vegetarian options. That's all I have to say. I didn't see anything vegan I wanted to eat, so we went somewhere else.
