I've been to see many movies at the Metro, including Star Wars Episode 3 (which thankfully was showing on one of their large screens). I don't buy movie food, so can't comment on that. They'll often show films that premiered at the other U-District theaters, which are Neptune, Seven Gables, or the Varsity (all Landmark Theaters too). If you have the misfortune of seeing a film on one of their small screens, you'll wonder why you didn't just wait for it on DVD - it seems the size of a very large home theater screen. But, otherwise, I find it to be a decent theater.

I'm not generally a sub fan (especially since I ate way too much Subway food last year), but I really like this place. They have unique and delicious sandwich varieties, with good vegetarian options. You'll have to wait a bit for your sandwich, but the extra 3-5 minutes really makes all the difference in taste. There's parking in front, but the lot can be crowded; it is also on the 72 and 372 bus lines.

This bread and sandwich shop on Sand Point Way seems to be beloved by its community, with people frequently stopping in for a loaf of bread on the way home. You can often get a free bread sample; even more amazing, they sometimes give out free pie or cookies! (I know of 2 days in the past 4.5 months that this has happened.) I really like their food, but with a whole sandwich costing around $8, I can't often afford to eat lunch there.

Since this is pretty much the only Bartell Drugs I frequent, I don't have a basis for comparison with others in the chain. However, I always try to go there because it's a local company. I find that it has almost everything I'd expect from a drugstore - if not always at competitive prices. Check the newspaper circulars for occasional excellent deals on food or drinks. The staff here has always been courteous to me.
Notes:
- You may have to ask at the front register to get help in the photo/electronics area
- The pharmacy is closed on weekends

Good yarn shops seem to be a dime a dozen around here; then again, I don't spend a whole lot of time in any of them. But I haven't seen one yet that I didn't like, and Acorn Street is no exception. This local yarn shop (LYS) has a variety of beautiful yarn in a small space. Walking around inside felt like a treasure hunt. The prices are similar to those of other LYSs.

The Ram strikes me as a classic steakhouse, with a variety of dishes incorporating meat and seafood. This place is often very busy; if you're going on a Friday or Saturday night, or with a large group, make sure you have reservations. Vegetarians should avoid The Ram; the last time I looked at their menu, I couldn't find a single vegetarian dish. I have particularly enjoyed their fries and the chicken caesar salad in the past.

I love coming into Artist & Craftsman just to browse. They have pretty much every art supply I can think of. They have a lot of paints, silkscreening materials, pencils, charcoal, canvas, paper, etc. They also have a bunch of art stuff for kids, so everyone wins. Prices are decent and I don't know of any store around that has a comparable selection of arts and crafts materials. The employees have always been courteous to me, even though more often than not I can only afford to browse.

If you need new clothes, and are tired of supporting companies that exploit workers around the world, American Apparel is the place for you. No annoying Abercrombie & Fitch logos or designs is a big plus for me. And they have an astonishing array of clothing styles, which is great since they pretty much only sell solid-color clothes. On the other hand, if you've ever seen their ads in The Stranger, you might have noticed that they seem to be selling sex more than clothing, with many scantily clad female models (and a couple of men) featured. And the prices are definitely steep.
For my money, I'd just go to a thrift store, recycling AND not benefiting sweatshop-using companies.

The Last White Elephant is a fairly standard small thrift store, with the usual array of clothing, accessories, books, music, and some furniture. The best thing about it is that the profits go to help Northwest Animal Rights Network causes, so while I can't recommend it wholeheartedly on the basis of its merchandise, I do think it's a good store working for a good cause.

The first time I purchased a hamster, it came from Petco. Unbeknownst to me as a first-time hamster owner, the one I picked was way too old to be able to socialize to humans well (at least two months old), and had wet-tail. He died three days later.
My sister twice purchased goldfish from Petco that also died within a week or two. I was disappointed that the staff sold me what I now know was a clearly sick hamster, and that the fish weren't hardy enough to even survive a very careful transition into a new environment. I urge you to give your business to a more knowledgeable and local pet shop.
