A nonprofit theater with unusual film choices

Sunday, March 12, 2006
I almost never recognize the names of any films showing at the Grand Illusion - but at least that means I'm assured of seeing something off the beaten path. The last time I was there, they were showing Rubin and Ed (rent it from Scarecrow if you haven't seen it - a weird funny movie, with some of the same stoically delivered humor as Napoleon Dynamite) for $1! This was last winter, and for some reason, as soon as the film started, they turned off the heat. By half an hour into the film, I was freezing, and I couldn't find anyone to alert about the incredible cold. This theater is the smallest one I've been in. You may want to arrive 15 minutes or more early in case your film choice is immensely popular that night.
