I'm not sure how long it's been since the A Pizza Mart remodeled, but it definitely looks much more like a place you'd want to hang out in now. I went there tonight and got the garlic/artichoke heart/sundried tomato pizza with their half-off special (they always have a bunch of deals going, the woman at the counter said [she couldn't even remember them all!], so it pays to find an ad of one before you go). It wasn't the best pizza I've ever had, but it definitely tops Domino's and Pizza Hut. It was my boyfriend's birthday, and we mentioned this, and got a free slice of ice cream cake. Awesome. With the half-off special, we paid $8 plus tip for our meal. They also have calzones, sandwiches, pasta, and beer and wine. It's open until 4 AM for your post-bar closing enjoyment.

With a large selection of landscaping and food-growing plants, as well as seeds, pots, soil, and everything else you need for gardening, City People's Garden Store has what you're looking for. They have a large outdoor nursery, with the native plants clearly labeled. The employees are quite helpful and the prices are reasonable. You can also shop here for gardening books and some household items and even furniture!

I have used this Kinko's several times for volume printing and smaller jobs, both for personal use and business use. They are thorough when going through your order (to the point that it can be kind of frustrating, but I think it's just their "quality assurance" bit), and my orders have always been ready on time, and often a few hours before. They can also deliver your finished print job to you, within a certain range. These are all things that I'm sure are characteristic of any Kinko's in this area.
If you're doing self-service copies, however, DO NOT go here! Go to any small copy shop on the Ave and you can save up to 3 cents per copy for self-service. I'm not sure how the prices stack up for volume or full-service copying, however.

DeLaurenti has an admirable selection of cheese, meat, bread, and other European specialty foods. They also have a coffee and snack bar in the corner across from the newsstand. The employees are friendly too. Being in the Pike Place Market, it can be astonishingly busy at times and full of tourists, so be prepared, but there are plenty of other places around to while away some time while people clear out. :)

Earl's is now located between NE 43rd and NE 45th on the Ave, in the old All-American space (good riddance to the A-A). Earl's has a bit of a seedy atmosphere, tends to be pretty crowded, and the staff can be short-tempered (don't tap your pool cues on the floor...).Having said that, the food is delicious and reasonably priced (vegetarian friendly) and they have a good selection of alcohol at good prices. I'd say it's a good place to go in mid-to-late afternoon; the couple of times I've been by in the evenings it's been crowded and not so pleasant.

I recently visited the Elysian and was impressed first off by the wide variety of vegan and vegetarian food items. Yes, it's located on Capitol Hill, but nevertheless, I have never visited a brewpub with such a selection for non-omnivores. I was further impressed by the prices and selection of the alcoholic beverages. My friend was quite pleased with his two different Belgian beers, and my Framboise was the best beer I've ever had (possibly because it tastes almost nothing like beer, more like sweet raspberry alcohol). I had a squash soup which was hearty and creamy (but creamless) and came with some tasty crusty bread. I strongly recommend this place!

As someone who has worked with volunteer groups getting donations from Pioneer, I have to say that I'm very impressed with their community spirit. We have almost always gotten a huge amount of produce from them. I received one box as a freebie for purchasing green power from City Light, and was quite impressed with the amount and variety of produce included. I have noticed, as others have, that much of their organic produce is not local; indeed, much of it is imported even from out of the country. If local and organic is very important to you, you might want to try another delivery company - but I think the value relative to the quality of the items is good at Pioneer.

I've been to the Metropolitan Market twice. The quality of the food they sell certainly seems high, but their prices are not quite commensurate with the quality - that is, quite a few of their items are ridiculously overpriced ($8 for half a quiche lorraine?!?). It seems to me that they are selling an image and an upper-class lifestyle more than anything. Metropolitan may be a good choice for flowers and gourmet bakery items if you live nearby. If you like quality organic or gourmet food, you'll probably save money by going to PCC or Madison Market, our local food co-ops. They sell the same quality food, although with a smaller selection of really gourmet items.

I almost never recognize the names of any films showing at the Grand Illusion - but at least that means I'm assured of seeing something off the beaten path. The last time I was there, they were showing Rubin and Ed (rent it from Scarecrow if you haven't seen it - a weird funny movie, with some of the same stoically delivered humor as Napoleon Dynamite) for $1! This was last winter, and for some reason, as soon as the film started, they turned off the heat. By half an hour into the film, I was freezing, and I couldn't find anyone to alert about the incredible cold.
This theater is the smallest one I've been in. You may want to arrive 15 minutes or more early in case your film choice is immensely popular that night.

If you don't know what you're looking for, you might just walk right past the Seven Gables - it looks like a large house from the outside. They've shown a number of good mainstream and independent films here over the years. The seats are pretty comfortable; the screen is small, but then again, so is the room. Prices are on par with the movie theater industry (i.e., awful). They have big signs warning you not to take outside food or drink into the theater - but nobody's watching.
