I was really disappointed in the level of creativity in hair styling I experienced at Habitude. Habitude is an upscale spa and salon close to the Ballard locks that I visited after receiving a gift certificate for services there. I needed a new look, and fast. My stylist got a case of the vapors when I asked him to cut my hair into an ultra-short style. The "color" that I was charged for was a well-kept secret-- I walked out with the same color hair I had walked in with.

After our Ikea bed collapsed and my husband woke up on the floor, we went to Don Willis furniture in Ballard. They source from local woodworkers and have a nice range of solid wood furniture, from basic pine shelves to gorgeous, ornate dressers and more. Compared to the downtown boutiques (referenced in my other furniture rant), the Don Willis beds were generally at least as good looking, equally high quality, and far more affordable. Check out the adorable pie safe, an adorable little telephone cabinet. Visit either the Ballard or Lake City locations. Good stuff.

So we are ready to buy nice furniture that won't fall apart in six months (yes, I'm talking about YOU, Ikea!), and started searching for a good looking chair. The boutiques down on Western Ave, Seattle's "furniture district," have beautiful pieces that are so expensive we would have to choose between eating and owning them. We stopped at Bassett's Furniture at the recommendation of a friend, and found a great chair for a more or less reasonable price. We were helped by a darling French woman named Nicole.
Bassett's pieces are locally made (or at least assembled), and come with a guarantee for as long as you own them. It's a nice happy medium.

Even if you generally love tiny neighborhood restaurants that no one else knows about, you have to admit that when it comes to sushi, high sales volume is a good thing. I Love Sushi is big and crowded, and there is no pretending that it's your little secret. The fish is always terrific, there are great views, the sushi chefs and waiter staff are pleasant. I have never been disappointed.

My recommendation: Leon Woffenden at Lake Realty. When we were looking for a house, I talked to several realtors. We told them what we wanted to spend, and they proceeded to show us homes priced above what we wanted to spend; they implied that we could never find a decent home for the (not insubstantial) amount we were willing to spend.
Unlike all the other realtors, Leon listened us and took a totally can-do attitude about finding us the home we wanted. We looked at great places, he offered great insights into the market, and we found a home that was perfect for us. I strongly recommend Leon!

Disclaimer: A native of the NW, I avoid the Pizza Wars between New Yorkers, Chicagoans, Italians, and the rest. For the thin, NY type pizza, Zagis and Crash Landing are great Ballard options. Sopranos makes yummy pizza of the thick, gooey, cheezy, gut-bomb variety. They will deliver to you if you live close enough, and you will be fat dumb & happy for the night. Eat-in is nice too. NOTE: their pasta dishes are not five star material; stick with the pizza.

This place is an oasis of good food where your crazed children can be placed in what amounts to a huge pen. You can watch them with whatever level of interest or detachment suits your mood while you eat a really good lamb souvlaki. (Lactating mothers: remember to eat enough!!) Unlike the attitude fiends at My Coffee Shop, staff at Vios are pleasant to you.

Despite the fact that there is never anyone in the Wild Orchid, this little Thai place makes a good, dependable Pad Thai, fresh rolls, & the usual suspects. My spouse thinks the pad thai rivals that of Thai Tom, but I think he's crazy. Nonetheless, getting this delivered to my door beats standing outside Thai Tom for an hour waiting for food. Be warned that recently Wild Orchid's dishes have suffered from spice inflation, so the 3 star was unpleasantly firey.
Anyway, keep this one in mind for dinner in.
ADDENDUM: Turns out eating at the restaurant is good too! The decor is pretty nice. I just tried and loved their yellow currie with potatoes.

Drop that silly Atkins diet right now, and go to the Tall Grass Bakery. Follow your nose in and you will find a team of hard-working, dedicated bakers pummelling and mixing dough. Though everything is terrific and organic, I have imprinted on the crispy-tender plain baguette. If you time it right, you can buy a warm one (I think they come out at 3 and 6 pm.) See if you can get home with the loaf intact.

If you work in the same building as the Lime Green Deli (as I used to), this is a convenient place to get nourishment. It is a couple of steps up from a food pill. However, most of the offerings seem to be designed to make sure you have adequate fat stores to survive winter in Antartica-- for instance, the thick hand made milkshakes and the greeezy pasta with meat sauce. If you have a couple of extra minutes and weather permits, I recommend you dash a few doors east to the bagelry or the Japanese take out place.
