If you go to Maximilien Bistro, go on a cloudy day. We went on a summer evening and sweated and stewed our way through our hot meals as the sun beat on us through the enormous windows. It is hard to be an enchanting presence, or even pleasant, when you are streaming sweat and getting cranky from the discomfort. I can't even remember the food, but everyone says it is good.

Honestly, I avoid even going into Clover. The toys are darling in that Germanic way that is the opposite of the crappy "planned obsolescence" of most toys. But do you really need to spend $30 for a felt pirate's hat for your nephew? And as for the clothes, I could probably commission my own designs to be produced for less than that. Great place to go for that one special gift, then get the heck out before you lose control. They do publish coupons here & there, which I approve of.

A browse through the Ballard Farmer's Market is a great way to spend an hour on a Sunday. It's spread out over a decent sized area, so there is less sensory overload than some really crowded markets. You'll see the same vendors there week after week and have your favorites. Ours include the Patty Pan Grill lady (love those huge quesadillas!), the jerusalem artichoke people, and the fellow who brings a live chicken in a cage to keep him company while he sells his organic eggs. Of course you can then make a side trip into the zillion shops in downtown Ballard. Good times.

Hey, I am as sick of raving fundamentalists as anyone, especially their obsession with other people's sex lives. But for me, unless I have some structure surrounding my spiritual life, it's just not something I ever think about, let alone work on. So here is a plug for a "blue-state" style church that is explicitly welcoming to everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, economic status, or whatever.

Though teriyaki is a fairly standardized experience-- meat, rice, iceburg salad-- we were particularly happy with our meal at Mami Teriyaki the other day. I have to admit that a big part of the charm was chatting with the guy at the counter about the Korean fashion magazine he gave me to look at while I waited for the order. Did you know that in South Korea, you can buy a little enclosed twin-bed sized pod, with a hard roof over your lower half and a fabric tent that encloses your upper half to your neck, and these beds are heated from below? So I learned from the magazine and the guy. Fascinating. And the food was really good.

St. Clouds has terrific breakfasts, including my fave per subject line. The atmosphere is airy and comfortable. They are happy to accomodate a largish party (you can call ahead and arrange for your group to have space). I understand the lunch and dinner and later evening hours are all great here, and I keep meaning to try. The name may seem familiar to you fans of literary fiction-- it is named after the orphanage in John Irving's Ciderhouse Rules.

I have a thing for really good corned beef hash for breakfast-- see St. Cloud's-- and this quirk drives my review of the Barking Dog. Went there, asked server about their CB hash: is it hand made or canned, is it in any way gloppy, do you recommend it? Was assured by server that it is made there and not gloppy. Received plate with lake of what looked and smelled like dog food. Still disappointed. I want to like the Barking Dog and will probably go back one day, but not for breakfast.

Zumzum (hereinafter ZZ) is one of your lunch options if you work in the IDX tower, Seafirst tower, etc. You may think "Oh, Indian food, it must be good and good for me!" While ZZ's huge piles of saucy dishes on rice will hit the spot for the first few bites, you will soon discover the food is really greasy and heavy. If you are like me, you will keep eating, because dammit, you aren't going to waste a meal! Zoom goes your body mass index, and un-zoom goes your alertness for the rest of the day.

If you are a stickler for super-authentic ethnic food, Louie's is probably not for you. Louie's has been a Seattle institution for decades, and packs people in for good tasting food that does bear a resemblance to food you might find in the International District. It does a nice job with dinners for a larger group or even a party. My extended family likes the Orchid Dinner menu, and the prawns in lobster sauce dish causes a near riot when it arrives at our table.
