A festive, bustling Mexican bar and restaurant in the Mission, La Rondalla is a good pick for a cheap and hearty food and drink. Plates of well-known Mexican dishes like enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos are served with chips and very spicy salsa. The pitchers of margaritas are so cheap and strong you might not make it in to work the next day.

This closest-sized French bistro is short on space but not on ambiance. Sample crepes, seafood entrees, and burgers while seated at a long counter overlooking the kitchen, or at one of the tiny bar tables by the window. The French cuisine is simple but rich. A perfect place to sip a glass of wine and share plates with a date.

This West African restaurant is a true gem in the eclectic and diverse neighborhood that is San Francisco’s Mission district. The Senegalese fare features lots of okra, as well as uniquely seasoned fish and chicken dishes, couscous and fried plantains. Hot ginger drinks and African beers round out the interesting menu. The atmosphere is lively and convivial, with sometimes-rickety tables snuggled up to the other patrons in the crowded central room. A fun and affordable restaurant you won’t forget.

This old-fashioned Irish pub tucked into an alley in San Francisco’s financial district is transformed each weekday night by the crowd of young professionals gathering to unwind after work. Guinness and beer is purchased inside, but the scene is outdoors. On a mild fall night, if the company is good, you’ll forget you’re actually in a bit of a downtrodden alley and just enjoy your drinks.

An inexpensive and tasty restaurant serving a menu of entirely vegan dishes. Dinner includes a variety of wraps, salads, pasta dishes and Asian-inspired noodle entrees. The vegan desserts (especially the pies) are surprisingly good. A cute and casual place to grab a meal on the run, and very easy on the wallet.

The French fare at Bistro Aix is consistently good, and an even better deal. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the calamari appetizer, the top sirloin burger, and the apple pie are all notable choices. A heated back patio adds some space to an otherwise very intimate restaurant. The surrounding neighborhood is perfect for an after-dinner stroll.

Cody’s Books has been a Berkeley institution since the 1950s, but only recently started gracing San Francisco with its presence with the opening of a spacious store in downtown S.F. Cody’s selection of books is more tailored than that of chain bookstores, but still very extensive. The atmosphere is casual and the staff is very helpful. Cody’s also offers free readings and events with authors several nights a week. Come when you’re looking for a book that you need, but, just as importantly, come when you have nothing better to do than browse!
