Ti Couz, a sweet little French bistro in the Mission, is a consistent crowd-pleaser. Healthy-tasting buckwheat dinner crepes and sinful-tasting sweet crepes make a lovely meal, especially when paired with a fresh salad and some wine. The prices are reasonable and the bistro atmosphere is neither too loud nor too sedate.

Platanos looks like an appealing choice for dinner with its South American jungle-themed decor and vibrant colors. But the food leaves something to be desired: the plantains are dry and the empanaditas and pupusas aren’t quite up to par. The Tres Leches dessert, however, is right on the mark. Generally overpriced for food that’s only mediocre.

Citizen Cake serves a nice, white-tablecloth dinner and a more casual lunch, and the food leaves very little to be desired. But the desserts will make you go out of your way to visit this venue. Homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches, gelato, a variety of individual tarts, pastries, and cakes and cupcakes make choosing just one treat nearly impossible.

The main draw of Mel's is that it is open at hours when its hard to find fuel anywhere else. You'll notice the clientele consists mostly of people making a pit-stop for snacks on their way home from the bars and clubs. Mel's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at all hours, but their desserts are the most reliably quality bet.

With a façade so unassuming, one wonders how everyone in the always-crowded Blue Plate found out about it. Serving upscale American comfort food, Blue Plate excels at its entrees, which are mostly meat-dominated dishes. (Order the rest of the stuff eventually; try the meatloaf first.) Blue Plate is narrow but larger than it looks, with several different levels and a lovely back patio complete with high-power heat lamps.

For a quick workday lunch, or a casual weekend bite to eat, you can’t beat the combination of setting, prices, and yummy treats to be found at Taylor’s. Dressed like a typical 1950s diner but with a liberal California twist, Taylor’s serves grilled Ahi tuna burgers along with its chocolate milkshakes. Taylor’s whips up burgers, fries, and Chinese chicken salads in a matter of moments. Located in San Francisco’s recently renovated Ferry Building, you can sit on the San Francisco waterfront while you enjoy your meal.

Osha is a hip, mirrors-and-chrome Thai restaurant that looks more New York City than Mission district. The more upscale setting translates into the occasional modest wait to be seated. While the food may not be at its most authentic, it's definitely tasty. The pan-fried noodles and curry dishes are solid bets. A good choice for a group outing.

Minako is a one-of-a-kind Japanese restaurant. Owned and operated by a mother-daughter team, dinner at this modestly-sized restaurant moves at a peaceful, languid pace. The food--all organic and vegetarian--is carefully prepared and presented. Go when you're not in a rush to get somewhere else; the point of Minako is to make an evening of it.

Where the idea for Frjtz came from, I have no idea. But you’ll be happy someone thought to combine crepes, thick French Fries served in an ice cream dish, and live DJ music in this cozy café. The fries are a must-order; but the atmosphere makes Frjtz memorable. Well worth a trip to Hayes Valley for an economical meal.
