Mullan's has been here since the 1930's, and the business has been kept in the family. You can tell the level at which the owners are comfortable with each other - they laugh, they tease, they have fun. But most of all, they ENJOY what they do, and they're ready to help you.
They've received numerous awards, including from the BBB, and I saw a thank-you letter from a Congressional Representative on the wall. Rather impressive, you don't see that every day!
The shop is huge and can accomodate something as large as a medic truck!
The brothers seem honest and hard working, and really seem to want to do their very best for you.

Merle Norman's may be a little pricey, but they certainly know their business. They specialize in fine, delicate hair, which is what I am cursed with. But what they can do with it! I was impressed with the level of care and concern they showed, and the time they took to do it.
The shop itself is clean and bright, with large mirrors and long counters of cosmetics on the other side.
There are a large number of cosmetics as well, and between the hair salon and the cosmetic section they can help you become a new person!

Groff's has been here for a long, long time. I remember them from when I was little! True pioneers in the health-food industry, back when the health-food stores were a somewhat unusual phenomenon.
I can often find things there that I can't find in other stores, and they're very knowledgeable and helpful. They have excellent research books and a large cabinet of herbal teas. Definitely a pleasant shopping environment, and a good place to spend some time.

A lot of variety in this store, indeed! Everything from food to furniture and mattress-toppers. Large, spacious, and well-organized. It's not hard to find what you need, although clerks will come...

They have a big book section, and a *huge* food section. Seasonal items include camping supplies and wheeled food coolers, as well as Christmas decorations and trees.
It's a little easy to get somewhat lost, though, as there are a lot of aisles!

I've been going to the Dollar Store for many years, and have found some things there that were real gems. However, you do need to be careful because sometimes things just don't seem to last very long, such as some battery-operated lights I got that broke after using for just one day.
Still, they do have some good party items, light bulbs, cleaning supplies, and other useful things. It's worth looking around, especially if you need stocking stuffers or other inexpensive things.

This Dollar Tree is almost as good as my favorite one, and has different stuff! Just because they share the same name doesn't mean they carry identical items.
This store has entirely different party items and toys. I found foil wrap here that was paper-backed, not foil-backed, and that was what I needed at the time. They had some really unique Halloween toys and gifts as well, which I had not seen elsewhere.
I definitely will go out of my way to visit this store sometimes.

I love the bright, cheerful Dollar Tree on 6th Ave. The selection of items is amazing - some of them are even name-brand items, which you seldom see in other stores. I've seen Reynolds Wrap alongside the 'dollar brand' stuff, and name-brand bath and body items as well.
The party section has a wide variety of items, everything from balloon weights to foil wrap, and the candy section includes unique things like individually-wrapped gummis.
They even have floor tiles of decent quality, that come in a three-pack for a dollar. Wallpaper strips, too, can be found here, in some of the most popular styles. They will even order some for you if they're out.

Albertson's tends to be one of the brightest-lit grocery supermarkets, and they have some things that others lack. For instance, I was able to find cocoa in Albertsons that did not include alkaline on the label, and could not find that elsewhere.
They have a good deli, and offer food tasting stands. A membership card gets you a discount at the checkout, and the pharmacy covers a lot of different needs. Always busy and bustling, the clerks still have time to give you a smile and greeting at checkout.

I love Big Lots. They have really good prices, and an amazing array of items that are overstock from other, higher-priced stores. I have found everything from Christmas lights and ornaments to camping equipment, clothes and home decor.
The people at Big Lots are usually very busy, so be prepared to browse the store by yourself. That's okay, though, since it's really easy to find most of what you might want.
Be prepared to be surprised, be prepared for bargains. The selection changes frequently, and when things are sold out they probably won't be back, so grab it when you see it!

I like the Union/S 23rd Target store for several reasons - it's convenient, being close to my house by bus - and they have good prices and a fairly decent selection. Plenty of checkout lines, as well, and they're usually staffed with enough clerks to get you out of the store in a reasonable amount of time. A small food court provides snacks if you wish, and the store is large and bright.
I especially like the home decor section, for they have things that some of the other store don't seem to carry, and at a good price.
The video/DVD section is quite large, as well.
